Prediction of mandibular movement and its

center of rotation for nonsurgical correction

of anterior open bite via maxillary molar
intrusion. Kim et al 2018

It’s important to quantify the proportion of changes in vertical and

sagittal parameters according to the extent of molar intrusion and
to determine the center of mandibular autorotation , for accurate
diagnosis and treatment planning.

Following molar intrusion : counterclockwise rotation of the

mandible occurs ,

Molar intrusion was performed bilaterally by using orthodontic

miniscrews , the intrusive force was directly applied only to the
maxillary posterior teeth that were not connected to the anterior
teeth and was not applied to mandibular molars. ‘the mean
treatment period was 9.7+/- 3.2 months.

After intrusion of the maxillary molars , the mandible exhibited

counterclockwise rotation which was confirmed by increase in SNB
& OB , decrease in ANB , OJ , SN-GoMe & AFH and forward
movement of Pog.

The center of mandibular autorotation was located on average

7.4mm behind and 16.9mm below condylion.

When the maxillary molar was intruded by 1mm, OB increased by

2.6mm , AFH decreased by 1.7mm , Pog moved forward by 2.3mm
and the SN-GoMe angle decreased by 2 degrees.
