1. THESIS PROPOSAL
Background:
The service sector in India is the fastest growing in the world, at 9.2% in 2015-16 and the lowest
share of services employment at 28% in 2014. This contributes about 66% to the Indian GDP.
The Indian government is taking aggressive steps to increase the commercial services exports
share in the service market globally, from 3.3% in 2015 and also to enable multi-fold growth in
the GDP at $2.3 trillion in 2016. For most of the past 20 years, employment in computer
systems design and related services has grown rapidly.(IT industries growth)
The importance of physical infrastructure to cater such growth is also important. One of such
infrastructures is office spaces which houses major share of tertiary sector.. These spaces are long
term investment for the companies and large no. of population, designing of these spaces has to
be taken with serious consideration
This thesis focuses on understanding the work culture of office and learning of how office
spaces evolved from a post office to modern day tech office where a person who works spends
an average of 8 hrs. a day. And also Based on energy optimisation is possible in an office
building through design of sufficient daylighting
Lighting generates heat and increases cooling load of buildings. Various tasks require different
intensities and different types of lighting. Sufficient daylight is available during office hours and can be
used without any load on electricity for lighting. Daylight is much more comfortable to work with as
compared to artificial light. At the same time, sunlight can be very intense and, if not admitted
properly in the building, can cause excessive glare, creating problem for users.
Though availability of daylight is useful for reducing energy consumption, simultaneously the designer
needs to be very careful the about visual comfort of occupants. Good quality light helps to increase
productivity and also saves energy. Studies show that out of the total energy consumption, 20-40% of
electricity is used for artificial lighting which can be reduced by appropriate use of daylighting
And other problems are offices have been designed open to encourage collaboration among co-
workers and contribute to a friendly workplace culture. However they also come with serious
drawbacks such as noise and distraction. A survey conducted by Oxford Economics of more than
600 executives and 600 employees was done to better understand what works and what does not
for employees regarding open-plan layouts, and to test for disconnects between the managers
and their workers. Results show that the risk of reduced productivity and worker peace of mind
are more serious issues than most executives realise, and lack the technologies and strategies
required to tackle these problems.
Aim : To design a user-oriented office building for software company with emphasis on daylight
factor in central indian region.
Objective :
* To study changes in work culture and spatial configuration till present.
* To understand daylight factor affecting physical and psychological comfort at workspace
*.To use natural light at daytime while use artificial light at nighttime for reducing energy consumption

Definition
OFFICE- a noun- A room, set of rooms, or building used as a place for commercial,
professional, or work bureaucratic work.(oxford living dictionary)

equipment, where a discreet group of any site work, self-directed work team fit in here.
Direction: The office should be able to give a sense of direction and a guidance of management
to various sections and departments through design.
Communication: It serves as a channel of communication between the different sections of the
organisation and handles mail.
Planning: The design of an office should help the management in planning a smooth functioning
and progress of the organisation through necessary information and data.
Coordination: Through creating links among separate departments, the office aids in facilitating
co-ordination.
