Part 4: Post Reflection Written Report

Label your sections as 4A, 4B, 4C to help in your writing organization. Be sure to include the
supportive components to this part of your report. This section of your paper should be 2-4 pages
in length. Please use appropriate APA citations as you reference different course and curriculum
resources. This paper should include:
1: An overview of what you observed in each developmental domain (physical, cognitive, psychosocial).
A. In your commentary, be sure to integrate a theorist’s perspective (Erikson, Piaget, or Vygotsky)
into your discussion of domains of development.
B. Include three to five specific examples of how your observational data complemented or deviated
from developmental milestones. (NAEYC 1a).
2: A description of three to five contextual factors (such as ethnicity, language, ability, socio-economics,
religion, and society) influence healthy development and learning).
A. Based on the child you assessed, specifically, what impact might cultural, familial, biological, and
environmental influences have on his or her physical and mental health, well-being, and nutrition?
B. Address how stress, trauma, protective factors, and resilience, impact children’s well-being, and
learning. (NAEYC 1b).
3: Based on what you have learned about this child and your knowledge of child development, explain how
you would create a healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging learning environment for her/him
(NAEYC 1c).

Part 4:
1.
a. Being 7 years old puts Louie in the Industry vs Inferiority stage of development. This stage

is largely affected by school, and is important in developing a child's sense of

self-confidence. School widens a child's social circle and worldview significantly. By

meeting new people, children are able to see that they may be better or worse in some

areas than their peers. If a child feels they are successful, they will begin to feel confident in

themselves, while students who struggle may gain a sense of inferiority. From my

observations, Louie seems to be excelling in this stage. He was very social with his peers,

and seemed to voluntarily participate in social activities.

b. From my observation, Louie seems to be meeting his developmental milestones. In terms

of cognitive development, at age 7 children start to look outward more and be more

concerned with others. This was seen when Louie participated with his kickball team during

recess, and the teamwork he showed. Louie also shows signs of typical physical

development for his age. At this age children typically like to explore their physical abilities

through games and sports, which is exactly what Louie did during recess. Lastly, Louie's

Psychosocial development seems as though it is progressing well. In line with development

for a 7 year old Louie seemed to understand the value of teamwork and sought out

friendships with his peers. This could be seen when he tried to organize a game of kickball

and cheered when his team did well.

2.
a. For one Louie is of caucasian descent, putting him within the 85% majority of his

community. This may influence what kinds of friends he makes during school, though this is

not a clear indicator of anything. Based on the area, Louie’s family is likely middle-class.

This means that Louie won’t have to worry about things like safety or food. Having these

needs met will allow him to develop himself more emotionally and physiologically. Lastly,

St.Catherine's school is a Catholic institution. While this religion can be a good way to

instill good moral values and integrity, this ultimately depends on whether or not Louie has

a good experience with it.

b. Before anyone can develop emotionally they must first satisfy their physical needs, such as

food and shelter. This is the basis for Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. In my opinion, Louie's

physical needs are being met at Saint Catherines, as well as his safety being generally

ensured. This allows Louie to move above the first two levels of Maslow’s hierarchy. In my

opinion, Louie is somewhere between the 3rd(Love and Belonging) and 4th(Esteem) levels

of Maslow's hierarchy. Here Louie can help build relationships with others, as well as gain a

sense of self-respect and confidence. That being said, other factors(such as difficulty with

schoolwork) can set him back. As said in part 1a, difficulty in school can discourage children,

and potentially get in the way of developing self-esteem.

a. Taking care of physical and safety needs is the first priority. Making sure Louie is fed and

given adequate physical activity is key. Aswell, if a child fears for his safety that can impede

emotional progress and have negative effects on development. After that it is important to

make sure Louie is engaged by school. Making sure he understands his school work and

lessons is essentially in instilling a love of learning and confidence. On the other hand,

making sure Louie is adequately challenged and does not become disengaged is a priority.
