INTRODUCTION
The Supreme Judicial Council is a body of judges which is constituted to hear the cases of
misconduct against judges. It is a unique institution constituted for the purpose of
accountability of judges.

The SJC is composed of:
FUNCTIONS
The supreme judicial council is a unique institution empowered by the constitution of Pakistan
for the accountability of judges. Some of its functions are as follows:
1. Removal of judge
The SJC can report to the president the incapability or misconduct of a judge of a supreme court
or high court and the president can remove the judge from office.
2 . Code of conduct
The SJC issues a code of conduct which is to be observed by the judges of the Supreme Court
and high court and if the judges act against the provisions of this code then SJC has the
jurisdiction to initiate an inquiry against the judge.
RELEVANT ARTICLES
Article 209
The article 209 of the constitution of Pakistan empowers the SJC and it also provides for the
composition of the Supreme Judicial Council.
ARTICLE 210
Article 210 states that SJC will have the same power as the SC to issue directions so as to
secure the attendance of any person or the production of any document.
ARTICLE 211
This article sets the bar of jurisdiction for the SJC and states that the proceedings of the council,
its report to the president and the removal of judge cannot be called into question in any court.
PROCEDURE
The SJC can act on its own initiative to start an inquiry against a judge and also when directed
by the president of Pakistan.
If there is a difference of opinion among the judges then the opinion of the majority prevails
and the report of the council which is presented to the president is expressed in terms of the
view of majority.

Current members of the SJC are as follows:
Jamal Khan Mandokhail and Ahmad Ali Sheikh (senior most judges of high courts).
