First Semester AY 2005-2006

Quiz #1: 23 June 2005

(1) Liquid/vapor saturation pressure P sat is often represented as a function of

temperature by an equation of the form:

b
log Psat (torr) = a -
t( C) + c
o

Here, parameters a, b, c are substance-specific constants. Suppose it is required to

represent Psat by the equivalent equation:

B
ln Psat (kPa) = A -
t(K) + C

Show how the parameters in the two equations are related.

(2) An electric motor under steady state load draws 9.7 amperes at 110 volts,
delivering 1.25 hp of mechanical energy. What is the rate of heat transfer from the
motor, in kilowatts? (1 kW = 1.34102 hp)

(3) One mole of gas in a closed system undergoes a four-step thermodynamic cycle.
Use the data given in the following table to determine numerical values for the
missing quantities, i.e., “fill in the blanks.”

Step Ut (J) Q (J) W (J)

12 -200 ? -6000
23 ? -3800 ?
34 ? -800 300
41 4700 ? ?
1-2-3-4-1 ? ? -1400

(4) Energy is added to a piston-cylinder arrangement, and the piston is withdrawn

reversibly in such a way that the quantity PV remains constant. The initial pressure
and volume are P1 = 200 kPa and V1 = 2 m3. If the final pressure is P 2 = 100 kPa,
calculate the work done by the gas on the piston.
