European Union- Travel Guide- due Wednesday/Thursday (4-17/18)

Setting the stage: You and your family are travelling abroad to Europe for one month this Summer! You will have
approximately 20 “vacation days” with 10 travel days. Since your parents know that you’ve been studying World
Cultures this year, they are asking you to create the travel guide and itinerary for the trip!

Groups: To create your booklet, you can work individually, with a partner, or in a group of 3 or 4(No Exceptions!)

Countries to visit: If you are working by yourself or with a partner, you will visit 6 countries on your trip and include
them all in your guide. If you are working in a group of 3, you will visit 8 countries, and a group of 4 will visit 10.

 The countries you choose to visit must be in the European Union (Countries not in the European Union will be
excluded from your tour but you may pass through them)
 You must visit at least 1 Eastern European country
 You must visit either Italy, Greece, or both

Travel: You only have 30 days, so make sure you don’t waste too much time on travel to distant countries for your next
visit (ex: don’t travel from Portugal to Sweden on the same day).

 You may fly only once while you are in the European Union- all other trips must be by train, bus, or ferry
 You must include how you travelled to your destination and approximately how long it took

Country visits: You may stay up to 5 days in each county. For each country you will:

 Travel to the capital and one other city or town (2 cities per country)
o Choose a town or city that is representative of the culture of that country. Perhaps there is some sort of
a summer festival happening or it is a place rich in history
 You should choose at least 2 sites in each city to visit and provide a brief description (one sentence) of what the
capital and other city are known for in Europe or around the world

Travel Guide requirements: The purpose of this travel guide is to get you and your family prepared to visit your selected
countries. You should include the following information for EACH country:

 Your travel and country visit information from the above sections
 What attracts people to visit the country & what draws citizens of the EU to want to live & work there (or leave)
 Physical geography (is the country mountainous, coastal, landlocked, etc.)
 Culture (language, religion, food etc.)
 Population statistics (size, density, growth, life expectancy, literacy rate, per capita income)
 Economy (currency, how diverse the economy is, what sectors most of the jobs are found, any iconic products or
food from that country- Volkswagen from Germany, olive oil from Italy etc.)

Format: Your guidebook should be anywhere from 14-18-22 pages (4-5-6 pieces of printer paper folded in half)
depending on how many countries you are visiting in your trip. Your guide book should include the following:

 A title page/cover
 Page 1- a map of Europe with your travel route drawn in (arrows showing the order in which you will visit your
selected countries)
 Page 2- an itinerary (list) of the countries you are going to visit- in order!
o Include how many days/nights you will be in that country and what cities you are going to visit
 1 whole piece of printer paper (2 pages of your book) per country, including the requirements above
o Countries should be in order of which you plan to travel
 You may add whatever pictures or illustrations you think will add to your guidebook
 Limit your information to the above. Do not include information about governments or political leaders/parties.
Do not worry about fun facts.
