I: So what is Sanitary Engineering?

J: Sanitary engineering, also known as public health engineering or wastewater engineering, is the
application of engineering methods to improve sanitation of human communities, primarily by providing
the removal and disposal of human waste, and in addition to the supply of safe potable water. As how
PRC Defines it, Sanitary Engg is the recommended engg course in our modern times. Our country needs
more Sanitary engrs to address public health issues arising from the rapid growth of population, and to
mitigate the worsening envinmental problems.

I: Can I also become a Sanitary Engineer?

J: Yes, you can of course.

I: But what primarily are the works of a Santary Engineer in particular?

J: Sanitary Engineers embrace the following activities (mas nice nay pictures every poihnt presented)

 Cleaning up of the environment

 Pollution control in air, water and land
 Protects public health
 Sanitation and hygiene
 Solid waste management
 Communicable disease prevention
 Water supply engg
 Sanitary sewerage system and disposal
 Storm drainage system
 Wastewater treatment
 Industrial hygiene
 Sanitary science as applied to building such as
- Engineered Plumbing System
- Fire Protection System
- Life and safety
- Swimming pools

I: Ohh that’s interesting, Do I laso have to take a board exam to work as asuch?

J: Yes, board exams on sanitary engineering are collaboratively made by the bpard pf Directors of
Sanitary Engineering Boards. The members of the Board of Sanitary Engineering who gave the licensure
examination are Engr. Corazon De los Reyes-Romero, Chairman; Engr. Alfredo B. Espino; member and
Engr. Florimond M. Lara, Member.
I: Unfortunately, Ive already enrolled in Civil Engineering, and cant afford to start all over again, pls help
me.

J: Don’t you wory, here are the qualifications to take Sanitary Engg boards.

a. Be at least twenty-one years of age;

b. Be a citizen of the Philippines;
c. Be of good reputation and moral character; and,
d. Be a graduate of a four-year course in sanitary engineering or BSCE having taken major
subjects in sanitary engineering from a school, institute, college or university recognized by the
Government or the State wherein it is established.
So yes, you can still become a Sanitary engineer provided that you’ve taken the major subjects
in sanitary engg.

I:Does that mean these two professions are the same?

J: While both civil and sanitary engineers design plans, what they are designing varies greatly. Civil
engineers focus on the development of various structures, including roads, buildings, and airports, while
sanitary engineers create different projects that can solve environmental issues.

I: Yey! That’s great news. So what is the coverage of the examination?

J: Sanitary Engineering 10%, Civil Engg 15%, Publich Health Engineering 15%, Environmental Engineering
20%, Wastewater Engineering 20% and Water Supply Engg 20%.

I: Hmmm when and where do they hold examinations?

J: Examination of candidates desiring to practice sanitary

engineering in the Philippines shall be given in the City of Manila, beginning the last Monday of January and
August of each year, provided that such days do not fall on official holidays, otherwise the examination shall be
held on the days next following.

I: But, I bet its not that easy, what if I fail? Do they still give second chances?

J: An applicant who for the third time fails to pass the examination for the
same grade shall not be allowed to take another until at least one year has elapsed after his last examination.

But I’m confident you can make it right away, no need for 2nd and third takes.

(highlight the importance of having license in practicing sanitary engineering in the Philippines)

I: Wow, thank you so much sir! Ahm, but do they have national organizations like others professions too?

J: Philippine Society of Sanitary Engineers (PSSE)

Its main office is in

Unit 403 PICE Bldg.
