SYNOPSIS

Indian Institute of Management Amritsar


1. INTRODUCTION OF PROJECT
After India became independent in 1947, the Planning Commission was entrusted to oversee and
direct the development of the Nation. India has been growing rapidly since then, In the late 1950s
the Planning Commission started feeling that suitable Managers for the large number of Public
Sector Enterprises that were being established in India as a part of its Industrial policy. To solve
this problem, the Planning Commission in 1959 invited Professor George Robbins of UCLA to
help in setting up an All India Institute of Management Studies. Based on his recommendations,
the Indian government decided to set up two elite management institutes, named Indian Institutes
of Management. Calcutta and Ahmedabad were chosen as the locations for the two new institutes.

 The Indian Institute of Management (IIMs) are a group of autonomous institutes of


management education and research in India.

 The Indian institutes of management (IIMs) are a group of 20 Public, autonomous institutes
of management education and research in India.

 IIMs amongst some of the most prestigious institutions of India. As in today there exist 8 IIMs
in the country, which are as following:
o Ahmadabad, o Bengaluru
o Kolkata, o Lucknow,
o Shillong, o Indore,
o Rohtak, o Kozhikode

 Seven more IIMs are proposed to be setup and IIM Amritsar is one of them.

 IIMs are declared as Institutions of National importance after the passage of Indian Institutes
of Management Act, 2017. With this act in place, IIMs leveraged up significantly to make
their autonomous decisions in their day-to-day operations. The act changed the governing
body from IIM council to IIM coordination forum. IIMs were granted much leeway to decide
their courses, fees and other related matters. The biggest benefit has been the ability of these
institutes to grant degrees to their graduates which many students and alumni had been
demanding for long.

 The IIMs mainly offer Postgraduate, Doctoral, and Executive education programs. Some
programs offered by all IIMs are similar; however, some IIMs offer unique programs for
specialized purposes.

 Various programs offered by IIMs are:


o Postgraduate education,
o Five-year Integrated Program,
o Doctoral education, Executive education,
o Armed Forces Program,
o Post Graduate Program in Public Policy Management,
o Post-Graduate Program in Software Enterprise Management
o Post Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management

IIM Amritsar
The Indian Institute of Management Amritsar (IIM Amritsar) is a public business
school located in Amritsar, Punjab, India. It is one of the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs)
established in 2015. It was inaugurated by Surjit Singh Rakhra, Minister of Higher Education and
Languages, Punjab on 6 August 2015.

IIM Amritsar is currently running from the transit campus located inside the Punjab Institute of
Technology, Government Polytechnic Compound. The lush green, 60 acres permanent campus for
IIM Amritsar will come up at Manavala on Amritsar-Jalandhar GT Road. The permanent campus
of IIM Amritsar will be constructed near NH15.
About IIM Amritsar
o It is one of the 7 proposed IIMs in India.
o The site proposed is at Manavala on Amritsar-Jalandhar GT Road, Amritsar-Punjab.
o The Project has been proposed in 3 phases.
o Site approach – 23.3 km from the Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee international airport.
12.8 km from Amritsar Railway Station
o To be built to cater 600 students in 1st Phase.
o Site area 24.6 Ha.

Aim:
To design Indian Institute of Management which is in conducive to management studies and best
management students are educated and to provide best learning and growing experience to be the
leaders of tomorrow.

Objectives:
o To understand basic conceptions, ideas, problems and prospects of campus design and planning
on regional context.
o To integrate various functions of campus in built form.
o To develop design at various stage and produce the final output of requirement.
o To design an Iconic building for the city of Amritsar.
o To do advance study and on passive cooling techniques and incorporate the study and key points
in design to produce the final output.

Scope:
1. Framing the requirements on the basis of case studies and surveys.
2. Zoning and site planning of the project.
3. Designing and Planning of
o Academic Block
o Admin Block
o Auditorium
o Library
o Student and Staff Residences

Limitations:
o Structural Design will not be the part of study.
o Cost analysis will not be the part of study.
o Electrical and Plumbing services will not be studied in detail.

Site selection - This site is proposed by the state government and MHRD, (Amritsar Punjab).
Site location - Manavala on Amritsar-Jalandhar GT Road, Amritsar-Punjab.
Client - Ministry of Human Resource Development.

Reason to choose the topic:
o The quality of education we provide to our young generations is what we expect to see as
result from them. If the environment provided to them is healthy then they will develop as
good individuals.
o We all know that the surroundings affect the person the most.
o As IIM is one of the full time residential campus, and being myself residing in residential
campus for more than 4.5 years, can understand the environmental requirement of the
campus.
o Also being an institutional project, I would be able to handle it after my graduation if
provided with the opportunity.
o Also IIM deals with only one stream, would help in to develop focused design.
