Bolt tensioning must be employed in connections in any of the two following cases: A) Slip critical joints B) Connections’ subject to direct tension. In any of the above two cases, the tum of the nut method is recommended by the AISC C as the best tightening procedure to be used in order to achieve the required bolt tension. : Although the torque wrench method is not recommended, the required torque values are. shown in the table below for reference. 2. Snug tight tightening need only be applied to shear/bearing connection. Snug tight conditions is defined as the tightness that exists when all plies in a joint are in firm contact. This may be attained by a few impacts of an Impact Wrench or the full efforts of a man using an ordinary Spud Wrench. Shear/bearing connection exists usually in following situation. - Mezzanine / Beams / Joist connections - Angle Bracing or any connection subject only to shear. (7.5 kg) Self contained, three position. CAUTIONS © DO NOT use impact tools. ‘© When used to break loose fasteners, select 2 torque multiplier with a maximum output capacity at least 60% greater than the installation torque specified for the application. This is necessary to prevent overload damage or failure of the output drive when loosening rusted or otherwise "frozen fasteners. (Example: For a 2000 ft. Ib. installation torque application use a multiplier with a rated output of at least 3200 ft. Ib.) © Inspect output square drive regularly for cracking and twisting. Replace if any fatigue or damage is apparent. (Order output square drive No. 62220). © DO NOT use torque wrenches to break loose fasteners, as this may overload and damage the ‘torque wrench. OPERATION © Select and attach appropriate 1’ drive impact socket andlor other drive tools. © Set anti-backlash selector for direction of rotation (CW for clockwise, CCW for counter-clock- wise) if manually driven. If power driven set in neutral position and lock in place with setscrew. © Select a suitable object for the torque multiplier to react against. This object should be stable ‘and capable of bearing the reaction force (Reaction Force = Output torque + Distance (from output drive center)). © Reaction forces may be carried in three (3) ways: 1. Against reaction stub - 2. Against reaction tube when attached to reaction stub. 3. Against extension slid over or into reaction tube. CAUTION: Extension should engage full length of reaction tube to distribute reaction force safely. Overall length oj tube and extension should not exceed 36”. ARMSTRONG Operating Instructions INDUSTRIAL HAND TOOLS WARNING: > To prevent accidental torque release, which could resut in | personal injury, the neutral positioning set screw (Fig. 2, tem 2) must be flush with the top of the housing whenever the torque multiplier is operated MANUALLY. ‘The selector pawl (Fig. 2, Item 3) must also operate frealy Inthe CW and CCW postions. > Inspect Output Square Drive (Fig. 3, Item 3) for visible sign | of fatigue or fracture prior to EACH use. Replace if necessary, (See Step 4.) Fallure of the Output Square Drive could result in an immediate torque release, causing Torque Multiplier to fall from the fastener and result in personal injury. > Do not add extensions to Reaction Anchor (Fig. 1 tem 2) 1 this could cause a failure which could recult in personal Injury. > Do not hold multiplier (Fig. 1, em 1) or reaction anchor (Fig. 1, em 2) while applying torque since normal mulipier deflection might cause fingers to especially in confined areas. > Maintain firm hand control of torque wrench or input turing’ device during ‘entire torquing effort, because forque’ windup ‘could cause torque wrench or input handle to spin In the reverse direction and result in nal inj 4, IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS 1.1.
