Introduction

Accuracy and Precision is that very important especially to us students? Well, let’s tackle
the true meaning of these terms. Accuracy refers to how closely the measured value of a
quantity corresponds to its “true” value. While precision expresses the degree of
reproducibility or agreement between repeated measurements. The students were given a
task to familiarize and have a better understanding towards the topic with the help of
instruments such as the yard stick, tape measurer, vernier caliper and micrometer caliper.
Each groups are obliged to solve for the mean of each set as well as the mean deviation, for
them to have a broad idea in comparing the accuracy and precision through the use of
these devices or instruments. In conclusion, the main goal is to identify and analyze the
errors and sources of possible errors in measurements, because the more measurements
you make and the better the precision, the smaller the error will be.

II. Abstract

In this performance task, the students are given a task to measure and to solve a copper
ball. With the use of formulas and equations, it was made possible. With proofs through
photographs, the group was able to present how the solution was done and how they also
measured the given object. Due to the time that we are given, it was a possible task to
finish. With the accomplished task. The group was able to present the final data in a matter
of time.

III. Methodology

The group is given 3 measuring tools: ruler, Vernier caliper, and micrometer caliper. The
task is to measure a copper ball using these tools. The group is given 5 trials to measure the
copper ball.

The group started to measure the copper ball using the micrometer caliper, first. This was
performed for 5 times. Next, the copper ball was measured by the Vernier caliper for the
same number of trials. Last, the copper ball was measured using a ruler. The group
weighed the copper ball and listed down all the measurements made. The group then solved
for the mean diameter, deviation of each measurement of the diameter from the average
diameter, and the mean deviation. Then the group solved for the percentage of error, the
volume of the sphere, and the density of the sphere. Lastly, the group answered the given
laboratory questions.

Results and Discussion

The experiment shows the different results

of measuring a copper ball. The group uses vernier
caliper, ruler and micro meter. In conducting the
experiment the group measures the copper five
times. First using a ruler the first trial measures
2.5 cm,the second trial measures 2.4 cm,the third
trial measures 2.6 cm, the fourth trial measures 2.4
cm and lastly the fifth trial measures 2.5 cm. After measuring, the mean diameter of the
copper ball is 2.58 cm. The mean deviation measures 0.064 cm, mean deviation average
measures 0.029 cm, the mass 68.5 g, the volume measures 7.986 cm3 and the density
measures 8.578 g/cm3. Another tool that the group uses is vernier caliper and the first trial
measures 2.5 cm,the second trial measures 2.53 cm,the third trial measures 2.52 cm, the
fourth trial measures 2.51 cm and lastly the fifth trial measures 2.51 cm. The diameter 2.14
cm, mean deviation is 0.0088 cm, average mean deviation is 0.004 cm, volume is 8.319 cm3,
mass is 68.5 g and the density is 8.234 g/cm3. And in using a micrometer the first trial
measures 2.51 cm,the second trial measures 2.522 cm,the third trial measures 2.516 cm, the
fourth trial measures 2.522 cm and lastly the fifth trial measures 2.51 cm. . The diameter
2.516 cm, mean deviation is 0.0048 cm, average mean deviation is 0.002 cm, volume is 8.339
cm3, mass is 68.5 g and the density is 8.214 g/cm3. In conclusion, using 3 different
measuring tools results that some of the measurements is the same but almost all of it is
different from each other. By using three measuring tools helps the group to conduct the
experiment well and also shows the different results of the experiment.
