1: Government Acupuncture Clinics, Research & Training


In West Bengal

I. Dr. B. K. Basu Memorial Research & Training Institute of Acupuncture


( Started functioning since February 3, 1987)
a) At present there are 3 acupuncture clinics under the institute at Kolkata:
i) Sambhu Nath Pandit Hospital, Kolkata-20
ii) NRS Medical College Hospital, Kolkata-14
iii) B. K. Basu Clinic (Prince Anwar Shah Road), Kolkata-45

b) Research works:
Clinical researches are done regularly to observe effects of acupuncture in various diseases
particularly in arthritis, painful conditions, ischaemic limbs (Buerger’s disease) etc. Some
research works were done in acupuncture in collaboration with S.N. Pradhan Centre for
Neurosciences, University College of Medicine, Kolkata.
Two scientific papers have been published in ‘World Journal of Acupuncture Moxibustion’,
Beijing, China, viz., a) Relation of ABO Blood Group with Efficacy of Acupuncture and b) Effect of
Acupuncture in Plasma Glucose Level in Human Volunteers.

At present clinical researches are being done to see efficiency of acupuncture in hyperglycaemia
(PP plasma sugar <199 mg%) patients.

c) Training programme:
16 weeks Certificate in Acupuncture Courses (affiliated to Council of Acupuncture Therapy, West
Bengal) are conducted. 204 doctors had undergone Certificate in Acupuncture courses in 21
batches up to April, 2011.

d) Number of patients treated: (up to 31.12.2010)

Total number of attendance of patients: 342965

II. Acupuncture Clinics at district hospitals:


Acupuncture clinics at all the 18 district hospitals and in 10 sub-divisional hospitals (Diamond Harbour,
Uluberia, Contai, Haldia, Arambagh, Bishnupur, Katwa, Ranaghat, Basirhat, Alipurduar) have been set
up. Patients’ attendance in the district hospital clinics in 2010 was 71868.
III. Council of Acupuncture Therapy:
Acupuncture therapy is legally recognised in West Bengal through ‘The West Bengal Acupuncture system
of Therapy Act, 1996’. Council of Acupuncture Therapy, West Bengal is functioning since April, 1997. The
Council renders registration certificate to eligible candidates and regulates acupuncture practice and
teaching.

Number of Registered Acupuncture Practitioners (up to 31.12.2010):


In Part A : 369
In Part B : 141.

There is one private Acupuncture Medical College in Kolkata which conducts Diploma in
acupuncture Therapy (three and half year) for freshers.
