Introduction

Norwegian based companies in the oil and gas sector have a well established
reputation and a significant market share as providers of services, equipment
and systems to topsides and substructures for fixed and floating production
platforms and drilling rigs. In this catalogue we present the cluster of partner
companies of Norwegian Energy Partners (NORWEP) that provide products and
services towards topsides in general, as well as for the various types of floating Regional Director,
support structures. Per Hagen
TOPSIDES
Generally topsides comprises of production systems, supporting systems and accom-
modation for personnel. Its content is derived from the services it delivers in exploiting
an oil and/or gas field. E.g. separate oil, gas and water, deliver power and other utilities
or accommodate personnel.

Its support structure; e.g. jacket, semisubmersible, or a floating monohull vessel, is

designed to support the Topsides in the marine environment and in some cases provide
storage of the produced liquids. In the early years of offshore developments, jackets
were normally used to support the topsides. However for water depths exceeding
150-200 meters, floating solutions are superior to fixed installations.

FLOATING SUPPORT STRUCTURES

Floating support structures have been deployed in a number of specific offshore services
both to find and develop oil & gas fields. Examples are mobile drilling rigs, service
vessels and oil production platforms. While the FPSO has been the preferred floating
production solution in most of the world, other solutions have been applied in the US
GoM, particularly Tension Leg Platforms (TLPs) and SPARs. The FPSO is the dominant
type of floating production unit and constitutes for around 70% of the market in 2010.
The FPSOs are particularly effective in remote and/or deepwater locations without a
pipelines infrastructure. In harsh environments the risers are connected to the vessel,
through a turret, which allows the vessel to weather-wane. Alternatively, in benign
environments like West Africa the FPSO can be spread moored and risers connected to
the vessel at the side.

The selection of the floating support structure depends on the following criteria:
• Dry or wet trees
• Storage requirement
• Available pipeline infrastructure
• Operator familiarity
• Field life
• Cost
• Area/field development plan (hub, tie-backs etc)

without discharge to the seabed. It gives primary

Typhonix Low Shear produced water pumps
Conventional centrifugal pumps are known
to break oil droplets while pumping produced
water. The consequence is that the efficiency of
downstream produced water treatment
processes is reduced. Often positive
displacement pumps, like eccentric screw
pumps, are used to counteract oil droplet
breaking. Drawbacks of positive displacement
pumps, however, are often high maintenance
requirements and restricted operational window.
Typhonix has over a longer period together with
the oil companies ENI, ConocoPhillips, Statoil,
GDF SUEZ, and the Research Council of Norway,
developed separation friendly produced water
pumps. The low shear/coalescing pumps are
developed for produced water applications.
Through extensive testing, Typhonix has shown
which does not break droplets, but design a
pump that enlarges oil droplets during pumping.

chemical discharges to the sea
• More energy efficient produced water treatment
and increased capability to handle process
