1 Purpose

Provide adequate protection to employees and contractors against identified workplace

hazards that cannot be sufficiently controlled by other means.

2 Scope

The purpose of a standard guideline is to enhance or provide detailed guidance to

ensure WinPort achieves the performance criteria laid down within HSE Standards.

3 Definition/Acronym

PPE Personal Protective Equipment

4 Responsibility

WinPort Manager has the overall responsibilities.

However, certain responsibilities associated with PPE use are detailed in the below
guidelines, and are to apply equally to WinPort employees as well as contractor staff
and visitors in PPE required areas

5 Procedure / Guidelines

5.1 General

PPE is not always the most desirable means of risk control and providing protection
against hazards in the workplace, nor is it a substitute for good safe working practices
and intelligent behavior on the part of all employees. Its use does not eliminate the
hazards in the workplace but it does help in their control by primarily protecting the
individual from exposure to the hazard. Information on individual PPE can be obtained
from the above HSE Standards and Guidelines.

5.2 Purchase of PPE

Items of PPE shall be purchased by the Company; those items are to comply with
relevant international standards. The Materials Department is to ensure that all
purchases of PPE meet acceptable standards. Advice may be sought from HSE when
selecting PPE, and Material Department regarding suppliers.

5.3 PPE Training

Supervisors are responsible for ensuring employees under their supervision are trained
in the correct use and maintenance of PPE. This may take place as part of the
employee’s initial induction or for some items as a specific training session. As a
minimum training should include but not limited to the following topics:

• Proper fitting/use;
• Care and maintenance;
• Replacement policy.

Guidance on individual training requirements may be sought from HSE.

5.4 Use and Maintenance of PPE

Once issued with PPE the individual employee is responsible to use/wear the PPE in
accordance with laid down policy. PPE is to be worn correctly and maintained properly.

Signs indicating PPE Policy and requirements are to be placed throughout the
workplace. Refer to HSE Guideline – HSE Signs for this requirement.

The use of PPE is a condition of employment, failure to comply with laid down policy
may lead to disciplinary action.

5.5 Replacement of Lost or Damaged PPE

Personnel are to report any losses and damage/defects in PPE to their supervisor
immediately they occur. Supervisors are to request/authorize the replacement of those
items. Should loss or damage to PPE be the result of negligence by an individual, or
should an individual fail to report to the job with the appropriate PPE then the company
reserves the right to replace those items at the employees expense.

5.6 Inspection of PPE

Supervisors are responsible for carrying regular checks on the extent of correct use and
maintenance of PPE. PPE is not to be modified, refer to replacement policy above
regarding damage.

5.7 Specific PPE Requirements
