Detailed Lesson Plan in Grade 9 Mathematics

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students are able to:
1. Identify the adjacent/ opposite sides with respect to the theta, and hypotenuse of a
triangle
2. Understand the relationship between trigonometric ratios and similar triangles
3. Use trigonometric ratios to solve applied problems.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Trigonometric Ratios
Reference: Next Century Mathematics
Fernando B. Orines; pp. 356-359
Materials: White Board, White Board Marker and Visual Aids
Time allotment: 60 minutes

III. Learning Activities

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Daily Routine

“Good Morning Class!” “Good Morning Sir!”

“Student A lead the prayer please” “Classmate let us pray” ( the students will
recite the prayer)

“Before you take your seat, arrange it first (students will pick up the pieces of dirt and
and pick up the pieces of dirt.” arrange their chairs)

“You may now take your seat” (the students will take their seat)

“Again, Good Morning Class!” “Good Morning Sir!”

“Are there any absent/s?” “None Sir”

“Okay, Very well!”

B. Review

“Last meeting we discussed about the similar

triangles”

“Can you define what similar triangles Student “Two triangles are said to be similar if their
B is?” corresponding angles are congruent and the
corresponding sides are in proportion. In
other words, similar triangles are the same
shape, but not necessarily the same size.”

“Very good Student B!”

“Since you already know what similar
triangles is, let’s move to our next topic. But
first I want you to answer this first.”

C. Motivation

“Class class class ? “ Yes Yes yes

Class ? Yes

Flat tire Shsssssssssssssssssssssssss…….

D. Procedure
“This morning you will learn what are the
trigonometric ratios, identify the parts of the
triangles and also use it in solving real life
problems.”

“In this triangle ACB, the side opposite to the

right triangle C is the hypotenuse denoted by
c, and the opposite side of the two acute
angles are the legs denoted by letter a and
b.”

“Using the sides of a right triangle the

definitions of trigonometric ratios of Angle A
are as follows:”
“The trigonometric ratios do not depend on
the size of the right triangle, but on the
measure of the acute angles.”

“I want you to remember this, SOHCAHTOA,

S for sine C for cosine T for tangent, o for
opposite a for adjacent and h for hypotenuse.
This mnemonic will help you to remember the
formulas in finding trigonometric ratios and
also the cosecant is just the reciprocal of sine,
secant, the reciprocal of cosine and cotangent
the reciprocal of the tangent.

“Okay let’s have some examples”

1.

Given a triangle, identify all 6 ratios for all the

angles (except the right angle)

“Yes Sir!”
“B Sin (200)”

“Can you follow class?”

“Another example”

2.

“in this triangle which is equal to a / c

a.) Cos(200)
b.) Sin(200)
c.) Tan(200)
d.) Cos(700)
e.) Sin(700)
f.) Tan(700)”

“Very Good!”

“Another!”

3.
Find the exact values of x and y.

(Mr. Dula will answer on the board)

“Yes , Mr. Dula on the board”

sin 30 o = x / 10
Use sin 30 o = 1 / 2
x=5

10 2 = 5 2 + y 2
Y= 5 3 (students will answer the problem)
“Very good Mr. Dula”

4.

If your distance from the foot of the tower is

20 m and
the angle of elevation is 40, find the height
of the tower.

E. Activity
Think-pair-share

Students will answer a question individually

and will share their answers to their assigned
partner and afterwards they will discuss their
answer in the class.

Find the length of AD. Show the steps of

your solution.
A

55 D
46

B 55.0 m C

Answer: 96.7 m

“Are you done ?”

“You can go to your group mate”

(every group will explain their answer in front)

“Yes Sir!”
“Very Good everyone! So we have attained
already our objectives for today’s discussion” (Students will discuss their answer to their
partner)
F. Evaluation

Seatwork: Answer the following

questions. Show pertinent solutions.

1. A person observes that from point A,

the angle of elevation to the top of a
cliff at D is 30. Another person at
point B, notes that the angle of
elevation to the top of the cliff is 45.
If the height of the cliff is 80.0 m, find
the distance between A and B.
2. A damaged tree is supported by a guy
wire 10.0 m long. The wire makes an
angle of 61 with the ground.
Calculate the height at which the guy
wire is attached to the tree.

G. Assignment

A helicopter is hovering above a road

at an altitude of 24 m. At a certain
time, the distance between the
helicopter and a car on the road is
45.0 m. Calculate the angle of
elevation of the helicopter from the
car
