The Iliotibial band is a sheath of thick, fibrous connective tissue which attaches at the top to both the
iliac crest (hip bone) and the Tensor fascia latae muscle. It then runs down the outside of the thigh
and inserts into the outer surface of the Tibia (shin bone). Its purpose is to extend the knee joint
(straighten it) as well as to abduct the hip (move it out sideways).

Steps:

1. Fold the triangular bandage into half.


2. Slowly straighten the injured person’s knee.
3. Wrap the triangular bandage around the injured part.
4. Make sure to secure the knot.
Sprained Ankle

A sprained ankle or twisted ankle as it is sometimes known, is a common cause of ankle pain. A sprain
is stretching and or tearing of ligaments (you sprain a ligament and strain a muscle). The most
common is an inversion sprain (or lateral ligament sprain) where the ankle turns over so the sole of
the foot faces inwards, damaging the ligaments on the outside of the ankle.

Steps:

Aim to reduce the swelling by RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) as soon as possible.

 R is for rest. It is important to rest the injury to reduce pain and prevent further damage. Uce
crutches it necessary. Many therapists advocate partial weight bearing as soon as pain will allow.
This is thought to accelerate rehabilitation.
 I is for ICE or cold therapy. Applying ice and compression can ease the pain, reduce swelling,
reduce bleeding (initially) and encourage blood flow (when used later). Apply an ice pack or similar
immediately following injury for 15 minutes. Repeat this every 2 hours.
 C is for compression - This reduces bleeding and helps reduce swelling. A Lousiana wrap bandaging
technique is excellent for providing support and compression to a recently injured ankle.

 E is for Elevation - Uses gravity to reduce bleeding and swelling by allowing fluids to flow away
from the site of injury.

Bleeding Knees

Steps:

1. Put the bandage over the injury.


2. Wrap the edges of the bandage around the injury, be sure to do it slowly.
3. Make a knot and put the extra edge inside the knot.
Injured Buttocks

Steps:

1. Place the bandage around the injured part in the buttocks.


2. Tie up a knot to keep the bandage in place.
Broken Legs

Steps:

1. Make an extended cravat bandage.


2. Find the site of the fracture.
3. Wrap the bandages around the injured part, make supports as well.
