1. Write the general steady state equation for the Birth and Death process. Write the basic

elements in the queuing system. Prove that 𝑊 = 𝑊𝑞 + . Prove that using text book
𝜇
notations 𝝀̅ = 𝝁
̅ (under steady state conditions). [1+2+2+1 M]

B) A queuing system has four servers with expected service times of 20 min, 24 min, 30min and
40 min. The service times have an exponential distribution. Each server has been busy with
a current customer for 10 minutes. Determine the expected remaining time until the next
service completion. [2M]

2. Cars arrive at a service station in Poisson process, the average interarrival time is 30 minutes.
The service time of a car has an exponential distribution with mean 60 minutes. A repairman
has to be paid Rs 10 per hour. Manager of the service station estimates that the goodwill cost
of a customer waiting to begin service is Rs. 12 per hour. Find the optimum number of
repairman (s) to minimize the mean cost per hour if there is space for only 4 cars who are
either in service or waiting and if all spaces are filled up, the customer will go to another
service station. [11M]

3. A factory has 4 machines. The time until break-down of a machine is exponential with mean
20 hrs. The time to repair a machine has exponential distribution with mean 10 hours. If the
factory hire two repairmen then find the number of machines which are in operations. [6 M]

4. In an inventory model the rate of production is 200 items per day and the demand is 100 items per day.
The set up cost is Rs. 80. The cost of holding inventory is Rs. 1.25 per item per day. No shortages are
allowed. If the lead time is 2 days, the quantity discounts are as follows
Order Unit cost (in $)
0 ≤ 𝑄 < 150 2
