1. Broad Gauge : The rails are separates by 1676 mm of distance and is the most used gauge
in Indian Railways. IR is planning to unify all the gauges across its network with the broad
gauge under Project Track Unification.
2. Meter Gauge : the distance between the rails is 1000 mm or 1 meter. Currently used in
Nilgiri Mountain Railway and some other monir routes.
3. Narrow Gauge : Used in Kalka-Shimla Toy Train. This is of two gauges - 762 mm (2 feet 6
inch) and 610 mm (2 feet).
Apart from the above 3 gauges, a standard gauge is also used in India. All the metros and trams in
India use this Standard Gauge(1435 mm)
