Reading Test  (Part 1) 
The probable format of IBT 
 

This section consists of 3 passages of 600 to700 words each, and followed by a number of 
questions in about 1 hour. The questions may ask about: vocabulary, pronoun reference, 
simplify meaning of sentences, where sentences can be inserted, find factual information, 
negative facts, inferences, infer rhetorical purpose, select summary information, complete 
schematic table. The following strategies can help you in the Reading section.  

Strategies for Reading Test 
1. Be familiar with the directions 
2. Dismiss the directions as soon as they come up. 
3. Do not worry if a reading passage is on a topic that is not familiar to you. 
4. Do not spend too much time reading the passages. 
5. Skim each passage to determine the main idea and overall organization of ideas in the 
passage. 
6. Look at each question to determine what type of question it is. The type of question 
tells you how to proceed to answer the question. 
7. Choose the best answer to each question. 
8. Do not spend too much time on a question you are completely unsure of. 
9. Monitor the time carefully on the title bar of the computer screen. 
10. Guess to complete the section before time is up. Points are not subtracted for

1. Vocabulary Questions  
For vocabulary questions, the targeted word will be highlighted in the passage. Find the 
highlighted word, and read the context around it.  

Example: 

Questions:  The Moho

Dalam menjawab pertanyaan ini, pertama tama yang harus anda cari adalah kata benda apa 
yang mengikuti kata ‘draw’ itu. Kata draw diikuti oleh kata benda ‘conclusions’ lalu cari apa 
kolokasi/kata sanding dari kata ‘conclusions’ itu seperti halnya kata ‘menanak’ dalam Bahasa 
Indonesia, kolokasinya adalah ‘nasi’. Draw conclusion = make conclusion. Dengan demikian 
maka anda akan menemukan jawaban pertanyaan no 1 yaitu D. Make.

2. Reference questions  
For reference questions, the targeted word will be highlighted in the passage. Find the 
targeted word, and read the context preceding the highlighted word. 

Example: 

Question:  The Formation of Tornadoes
