PhD THESIS:
On-chip communication topologies can have a great influence on the speed and area of multi-core
processor designs. An efficient on-chip interconnection strategy, to facilitate communication among
different IP blocks, is an active research area of present era. Researchers have proposed different types
of on-chip interconnection structures in past 5 of years of which 2D mesh topology has gained confidence
of researchers as well as industry. Every topology has its merits and demerits. 2D mesh topology has
gained confidence of researchers as well as industry due to its symmetry, regularity simplicity, but its link
count and diameter increases as the number of nodes increase. We believe that 2D mesh also loses
structural locality with increasing network size, this results in an in efficient speedup characteristics. On
the other hand TriBA has comparatively low link count and better structural locality with increase in
network size.
This research consists of three parts:
First, it evaluates the Triplet Based Architecture TriBA- a new idea in chip multiprocessor communication
architectures and a class of Direct Interconnection Network DIN), and compares it with other on-chip
interconnection topologies for computational efficiency.
Second, design and Implementation of a generalized software platform, a simulation tool, for evaluating
the routing algorithm for TriBA, already proposed.
Third, we propose and evaluate a simple model of tentative wires for efficient area-power performance
of TriBA as an on-chip interconnection topology.
