ANALYSIS THE UNINVITED
BY THE MAIN CHARACTER OF THE MOVIE

The Uninvited is a 2009 American psychological horror film directed by the Guard
Brothersand Starring Emily Browning, Elizabeth Banks, Arielle Kebbel, and David Strathairn. It
is a remake of the 2003 South Korean horror film A Tale of Two Sisters, which is in turn one of
several film adaptations of the Korean folk tale JanghwaHongryeonjeon."The Uninvited"
revolves around Anna, who returns home after spending time in the hospital following the tragic
death of her mother. Her recovery suffers a setback when she discovers her father has become
engaged to her mother's former nurse, Rachel. That night, Anna is visited by her mother's ghost,
who warns her of Rachel's intentions. Together, Anna and her sister try to convince their father
that his current fiancée is not who she pretends to be, and what should have been a happy family
reunion becomes a lethal battle of wills between stepdaughters and stepmother.
Personality Theory by Sigmund Freud, is the result of conflict and reconcialitation of
the three personality system. Next, Freud discussing to division of human psychological in three
parts: Id, ego, super-ego. According to Freud, id is the original element human being owns when
they were born. It is in need of the elementary things, for example, food, shelter, clothes and so
forth. The id in this movie, actually Anna knows that her mother and her sister died due to an
accident caused by her. Then the “ego” comes,The Ego is caught between two opposing forces,
and obeys the principle of reality by trying to fulfill the reality of the bounded reality. But the
ego in this movie turns out because in the factAnna can’t accept the truth that her mother and her
sister died because of her and she always thought that Rachel was the killer. ThereforeThe super-
ego acts, the Super-ego or above represents the moral and idea aspects of personality and is
guided by moralistic and idealistic principles as opposed to the pleasure. The super ego in this
movie tells that Anna becomes stressed because she cannot accept the death of her mother and
her sister, she always pretends that they are still alive. Then, she often hallucinates and
sometimes she accidentally injures and kills people around her.
This movie is interested to be analyzed because the conflicts happened in the movie
itself are interesting. Major conflict which is emphasized in this movie is when Anna didn’t
realize that she killed people around her because of her menthal illness. In this movie, we found
that there isDefense Mechanisms of the main character, and the defense mechanisms that Anna
has is denial. “According to Anna Freud, Denial is a defense mechanisms which involves refusal
to accept reality thus blocking extrenal events from awareness” Because, the main character in
this movie didn’t accept the fact of the death of her mom and her sistercaused by her and
sometimes she always halucinates that they are still alive. This movie is very suitable to analyze
with schizophrenia theorybecause The Uninvited really portrayed a pretty realistic interpretation
of Schizophrenia. According to Sigmund Freud in his Theory of Psychopatology, Schizophrenia
is a menthal disorder characterized by distortion in thinking, prespection, emotions, language,
sense of self and behaviour (WHO) and it is one of the most complex and disabling diseases
(Weinberger & Harrison, 2011. What I liked about the movie was that Anna’s character depicts
one version of reality(a reality that villainizes Rachel) Understanding Anna’s version of reality
really characterizes the nature of the disorder; by unknowingly being able to sympathize with a
schizophrenic character.
The most common early warning signs include :
1. Depression, social withdrawal.
2. Hostility or suspiciousness, extreme reaction to criticism.
3. Deterioration of personal hygiene.
4. Flat, expressionless gaze.
5. Inability to cry or express joy or inappropriate laughter or crying.
6. Oversleeping or insomnia; forgetful, unable to concentrate.
7. Odd or irrational statements; strange use of words or way of speaking.
THE ANALYSIS

The main character in the film named Anna, she is portrayed as an innocent girl, but
she suffers from a mental disorder because she cannot accept the fact that her sister and mother
died in an accident caused by it. Throughout the film The Uninvited, as the main character in this
film Anna always experiences hallucinations from her subconscious, and we find four
hallucinatory incidents experienced by Anna. Every incident based on hallucination made him
unaware that he was hurting and even killing someone. in every hallucination she always sees
other people who are committing the crime that she committed.

In the first case, Anna as the main character in this film experiences hallucinations that
she saw her mother who had died. she entered the house that had been burned down due to an
accident that she caused. The situation of the house has been repaired but no one lives in it.
Then, she entered into it. Until one day she saw her mother and shouted at Anna as a murder.
“Mom : Murderer!
Murderer!
*SCREAM*”

At that time Anna was still unconscious if her mother was dead and she was the one who caused
the accident. He was surprised to find his mother at his old home.
“Alex : Anna?
What are you doing down here?
Hey. Are you okay?
Anna : It was Mom.
Alex : What?
Anna : I saw Mom!”

In the second case, Anna killed Matt. He is a young man and anna’s lover. In this case
he killed his victim without realizing it. He hallucinated that Matt entered his bedroom through
the window.
“Anna : What happened? You're soaked.
Matt : You know, I fell and hurt my back
or something.
Anna : Well, here, come sit down.
Matt : I'm sorry it's so late, but... It's just...”

They had an abstract conversation and after that in Anna’s hallucination Matt changed into
something scary, there’s something strange with his back and made Anna scared.
“Matt : You're shivering.
I can't feel anything.
I'm scared, Anna.
Anna : Don't be.
Anna : Matt, what happened to your back?”

In her hallucination she accidentally killed Matt because of that incident. But she thought that it
was a dream. But, the next day Matt was found dead in the sea. Meanwhile in reality when they
met in the night, Matt want to try to speak something about the truth that he knew. But, Anna
pushed him down from the cliff into the sea.

“Matt : I followed you home that night, Anna.

I saw everything.
Don't let go. Anna, hold me.”

In the third case, Anna always hallucinates that the death of her mother and sister was
caused by Rachel (Rachel is a nurse who works to care for her). He said that Rachel was the one
who was involved in the murder because Anna had seen her father and rachel who had sex
before, so she thought that Rachel was killing her mother so that she could take her father’s
heart. In anna's hallucination alex convinced her that Rachel had killed their mother, in the end
Alex killed rachel because he couldn’t things about something else to do on rachel.

“Alex : We tried everything, Anna.

This was the only way.”
Also, in Anna’s Hallucination. Right after alex killed Rachel, anna tried to calm her down and
comfort her, she tried to keep alex less afraid and guilty.
“Alex: I had to, Anna. Didn't l?
Didn't I have to?
Anna : It's okay. It's okay.
I'm here. I'm always here.
Look at me. Look at me.
Be brave, okay? Okay.”

Throughout this film, Anna has always hallucinated that her sister named Alex was still alive.
she often chatted with Alex who in fact she was hallucinating. In the last event, all of Anna's
hallucinations were revealed. it happened because Anna's father was shocked by Anna's
condition after killing Rachel's
“Dad : Oh, my God. Are you all right?
Anna: It's Rachel, Dad. Rachel started the fire.”

Anna hallucinates that alex is the one who killed Rachel, she also tries to persuade her
father that alex is not wrong at all and he considers if it is a form of their self defense.
“Dad : What are you talking about?
Anna : She killed Mom.
Dad, I know you never listen to me,
but you have to believe us!
She waited until you were out of town,
and she drugged me,
and she drugged Alex.”

when she tried to explain everything to her father. She always mentioned and asked Alex to say
something.
“Anna : She was gonna kill us.
Alex had to do it, Dad. She saved us.
Alex?
Alex, tell him.”

When Anna did that, her father was shocked, Alex died a year ago because their house was on
fire, and the accident was caused by Anna. his father also explained what happened to alex.
“ Dad : Anna, what are you saying?
Alex : He can't see it, Anna. He never will.
Dad : Anna, you know what happened
to your sister.
Anna : Tell him, Alex.
Alex : Don't believe him.
Dad : She died in the fire.
lt was a year ago.”

In the end after her father explained the facts about alex. all of Anna's memory was
spinning very fast, about what actually happened so far. she couldn’t accept the fact that she was
hallucinating and she was the one who commited crimes. Alex disappeared and left Anna in a
terrible state. Anna became hysterical.
“Anna : Get away from me.
Get away from me.
Get away from me !”

So, The Uninvited is American psychological horror film and Anna as the main
character in this movie has a mental disorder which is schizophrenia. In this movie, she can’t
accept the truth of the death of her mother and her sister, so that she always hallucinates about
them. Her hallucinations led her to commit crime without she realize about that. Because the
main character got mental disorder, Schizophrenia Theory by Sigmund Freud is very suitable to
analyze this movie.
