Introduction
The use of language in communication is an important factor. A
communication is a form of conveying messages of thought and feeling through a
particular channel to an individual to another. One of the languages now rapidly
developing is English. English became the international language spoken today by
foreigners. In Indonesian, English is learned as the second language after Indonesian.
English can also make it easier to communicate with foreigners. English education
goes from childhood to adult through formal school education and non-formal
education from the family environment. The English taught many things by writing,
reading, listening, and speaking. Speaking English has been one of the challenges for
Indonesians. Although, a foreign language is learned at an early age but the fear that
comes from speaking a foreign language is inevitable.
According to Cutrone (2009) says that speaking English in public can cause
undue anxiety. In addition, many students when in the English class only speak when
told to even some are silent. This is done because when they speak English in front of
the class and even in public at the same time the mind suddenly becomes unfocused
and speech is not fluent. In this paper, author will explore how people perspective
about anxiety when speaking English in front of the class, the causes of anxiety that
arise, the characteristics of anxiety felt when speaking.
Because of that, the learning process in the classroom becomes less effective.
According to Brown (2000), the affective factors affecting the learning process are 3
of self-confidence, motivation, and self-anxiety. That confidence needs to be
enhanced when communicating in English because high confidence can improve
when speaking. A person can speak the language fluently and well when confident is
not to be mistakes, his surroundings promote such English as one with low resistance
and low anxiety.
The aim of study was to discern factors that had a bearing on growing anxiety
while speaking English. So, that it can help find solutions to these fears. There are
three things can we discuss about anxiety in public speaking which is perspective
agribusiness student at Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta about anxiety, the
causes of anxiety that arise, and the characteristics of anxiety felt when speaking.
Specifically, we were interested to in the following three questions that guided our
research.
1. What are the reasons that trigger anxiety when speaking English?
2. How to deal with people who experience excessive anxiety?
3. What are the characteristics of people who feel anxious when speaking English in
public?

Literature Review
Public speaking is a process, an act or an art that anyone can perform. Public
speaking not only speaks but has to serve a clear purpose. Public speaking not only
conveys an idea, a piece of information, it can also change the emotions, the actions,
the attitudes of the listeners. (Nikitina, 2011)
The ability to speak to each person is different, so it can be seen when
speaking in English. Speaking in English is a great need to be learned, since English
is a second international language after English and English is also a bridge for
communication between countries. Training English skills is not difficult because it is
learned in everyday life, as in school English becomes a compulsory study and when
learning is done, learning English can be trained to speak English, learning English
can also be done by adopting even autodidacts. Although speaking English is the
norm, many still feel nervous or anxious when speaking English in public. (Gaibani
& Elmenfi, 2016)
Anxiety is something a person feels when facing a threat, a danger, and stress.
One who is experiencing anxiety the most obvious stress, irritation, and discomfort. A
constant state of anxiety, discomfort, and excess tension are among anxieties.
Therefore, when the anxious state of English is constantly anxious, it affects one’s
thinking, behavior, and feelings. Some studies have show that the country, which
speaks English as the second language after that country original language, suffers
from a high level of anxiety. (McCroskey, 1978)
According to Brown (2000) It's something that researchers can know when
they're speaking in public, like shame, when they're talking a lot of pauses, not
confidence in what they're talking about, which is a tremendous fear of wrong. For
people who are studying, they have that experience, especially in class. Some of the
factors that affect anxiety while speaking in foreign languages in class are a lack of
comfort, a fear of failure, and a fear of negative judgment. The presence of this
problem arose on a scale to analyze the anxiety levels of the foreign-language world.
According to Horwitz et, al, (1986) that a scale has developed to measure the amount
of anxiety or anxiety experienced by many in their foreign language. This scale is
called "Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety scale" (FLCAS).

worrying.
Of all respondents who had filled out this questionnaire, the factors
underlying anxiety arising when speaking English were those who needed to speak
English instead of being a daily language. In addition to the number of audience in
the class who really influence their focus when talking so that when speaking they
