HISTORY
● 1977
● By Tracy Terrell and supported by
Stephen Krashen
● They published the results of their
collaboration in the 1983 book The
Natural Approach.
THEORY
● The essence of language is meaning.
● Vocabulary, not grammar is the heart of language.
● Difference: “acquisition” a natural subconscious
process and “learning” a conscious process. The
focus is on meaning, not form (structure
grammar).
OBJECTIVES
● N.A is for beginners and is designed to help them become
intermediates.
● The students will be able to function adequately in the
target situation. They will understand the speaker.
● They should be able to make the meaning clear but not
necessarily be accurate in all details of grammar.
● After 100-150 hours of Natural Approach Spanish, you will
be able to: "get around" in Spanish; you will be able to
communicate with a monolingual native speaker of
Spanish without difficulty.
● Read texts in Spanish

- The native language

shouldn’t be used in class.

POINT OF VIEW
Learning a second language in
children is very similar to the
process of learning their native
language
TEACHER’s ROLE

comprehensible input

classroom activities.
● Use plenty of vocabulary
● He shouldn’t use the mother
tongue in class.

what to speak about, what linguistic
expressions to use.
● Pre- production stage
● Early production stage
● Speech- emergent phase
MATERIALS
● Books with images
● Language labs
● Music - videos
● Visual aids
● Games ( Ex: Lottery
game)
● Classroom with pictures
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

● Easy ● It is difficult to teach in a

● Didactic big group.
● Vocabulary is
learning more fast ● Grammar

● Vocabulary
CONCLUSION
● The use of the term ‘Natural Approach’ rather
than ‘Method’ highlights the development of a
move away from ‘method’ which implies a
particular set of features to be followed, almost as
to ‘approach’ which starts from some basic
principles which are then developed in the design
and development of practice in teaching and
learning.
