LIST OF TABLES
Table 1: Member terminology ......................................................................................................................... 7
Table 2: Load Case Legend .......................................................................................................................... 10
Table 3: Cross-section classification ............................................................................................................. 25
The beam-to-beam spans which must be accommodated by the steel curb structure range from 7.3m
to 21.8m. There are four lines of support required on each of the north and south edges of the
skylight; one located below each skylight panel. Each line of support or rail location (labeled “T1”-“T4”
in structural drawings) varies in length and is spaced from adjacent rail locations by approximately
2.5m.
This document is intended to be read in conjunction with the “Design Criteria Report” for the same
project.
In the areas where the required curb span is between 7.3m and 10.5m, a single-line built-up beam
with a horizontal truss has been designed. In areas where the required curb span is greater than
10.5m, a horizontally and vertically trussed long-span structure has been designed.

Sample calculations for determining the designations of compression and of flexural members
per Tables B4.1a and B4.1b are shown below. A summary of the member cross-sections,
member types, and member designations is shown in Table 3.
Thickness; t = 12.7 mm
Width; b = 152 mm-(4t) = 101.20 mm
Height; h = 254 mm-(4t) = 203.20 mm
Width to thickness ratio; b/t = 7.97
Height to thickness ratio; h/t = 16.00
Limiting ratio (nonslender/slender); r = 1.40((E/Fy)) = 34.54
∴ since 7.97 < 34.54 HSS is nonslender.
Limiting ratio (web compact/noncompact); pw = 2.42((E/Fy)) = 59.71
∴ since 16.00 < 59.71 web is compact.
Limiting ratio (flange compact/noncompact); pf = 1.12((E/Fy)) = 27.63
∴ since 7.97 < 27.63 flange is compact.
Therefore, section is nonslender and compact.
Thickness; t = 15.9 mm
Width; b = 254 mm-(4t) = 190.40 mm
Height; h = 254 mm-(4t) = 190.40 mm
Width to thickness ratio; b/t = 11.97
Height to thickness ratio; h/t = 11.97
Limiting ratio (nonslender/slender); r = 1.40((E/Fy)) = 34.54
∴ since 11.97 < 34.54 HSS is nonslender.
Limiting ratio (web compact/noncompact); pw = 2.42((E/Fy)) = 59.71
∴ since 11.97 < 59.71 web is compact.
Limiting ratio (flange compact/noncompact); pf = 1.12((E/Fy)) = 27.63
∴ since 11.97 < 27.63 flange is compact.
Therefore, section is nonslender and compact.
Thickness; t = 9.5 mm
Width; b = 101.6 mm-(4t) = 63.60 mm
Height; h = 203.2 mm-(4t) = 165.20 mm
Width to thickness ratio; b/t = 6.69
Height to thickness ratio; h/t = 17.39
Limiting ratio (nonslender/slender); r = 1.40((E/Fy)) = 34.54
∴ since 6.69 < 34.54 HSS is nonslender.
Limiting ratio (web compact/noncompact); pw = 2.42((E/Fy)) = 59.71
∴ since 17.39 < 59.71 web is compact.
Limiting ratio (flange compact/noncompact); pf = 1.12((E/Fy)) = 27.63
∴ since 6.69 < 27.63 flange is compact.
Therefore, section is nonslender and compact.

This analysis is completed in accordance with AISC 360-10; flexure calculations are in
accordance with F3, compression calculations are in accordance with E3. The following
calculations reflect the governing loading condition for each cross-section. Governing internal
forces are taken from the output of the RFEM analytical model.
For the purposes of following AISC 360 naming convention, the cross-sectional axis labels used
in the following analysis have been modified from those in the RFEM outputs shown in. For
instances where the “y” axis has been shown in Table 3, the analytical axis will refer to the “x”
axis, and where the “z” axis has been shown in Table 3, the analytical axis will refer to “y” axis.

account for this in the calculations, we have considered an adjusted Zx value corresponding to
a deeper section. The adjusted depth of the section is based on the distance between the
2.8 BUCKLING
The critical load factors for the governing load combinations in both the Open and Closed
configurations are shown in Figure 14 and Figure 15. The first 20 eigenvectors for buckling are
shown for each configuration and do not represent global buckling modes.
2.9 SERVICEABILITY
The deflection criteria for the structural members are per the design criteria report. The dead load
deflection values by cross-section are shown in Figure 16 through Figure 25.
For the purposes of structural design, the deflection of the walkways has been ignored.
