INTRODUCTION
Analytics India Annual Salary Study aims to understand a wide
range of current and emerging compensation trends in Analytics
& Data science organisations across India. The idea is to provide a
reference point on key aspects around analytics salaries in India
and potential future HR trends. It brings a cumulative picture of
salary trends across company type, skills, analytics tools, cities,
experience level, education level etc.

It is well understood that companies across all domains such

as banking, telecom, retail, and others have resorted to data
and analytics to make sense of large amount of data that they
are exposed to. This has resulted in an increase in demand of
analytics professionals, who can bring expertise in analytics tools
and languages such as R, Python, Hadoop visualization tools, etc. ,
giving rise to analytics related job roles such as data engineering,
big data, predictive modelling and others. This has called for an
increase in median salary compared to last year.

The study details about analytics professionals across company

types such as captive centers, domestic firms, IT service providers,
consulting firm and others, spread across various Indian cities.

Gender gap is another crucial area covered as a part of this year’s

salary study. The pay scale of women analytics professionals
seems to be at a lower end compared to male counterparts, and
the study presents you with exact numbers.

This study has been carried out by Analytics India Magazine in

association with Great Learning. All salaries mentioned in the
study are in Lakhs (L), per annum, in Indian rupees (wherever not
mentioned).

EXPERIENCE LEVELS
Salaries across experience levels is a critical factor to judge how the industry
rewards seniority. Experience Levels could also be seen as designation like
analyst, manager, director etc., but we chose to look at the number of years
in the industry. This is a more quantitative assessment and can resonate
easily with larger folks.

ANALYTICS SALARIES
ACROSS INDUSTRIES
We notice a wide range of median analytics salaries across the sectors. So,
while telecom has the highest median salaries in analytics at 18.6 Lakhs, media
& entertainment has the least median salaries for analytics professionals at 10.3
Lakhs. This is a very wide range (higher variances) in terms of median salaries.
Salaries within an industry is affected broadly by two indicators - the rate of adoption
of that technology within that industry and the relative value that the industry garners
from the technology. A higher adoption rate would signify a relative stabilisation of
resources and processes which in turn would cause a dip in salaries. Industries that
have recently adopted analytics would also see a skew towards higher senior level
professionals vis-à-vis other industry, thus pushing the median salaries higher.
For eg: Banking industry is among the earliest adopters of analytics in India. It is also
by far the biggest recruiter of analytics professionals in India. The salaries in Banking
for analytics professionals currently stands at the lower spectrum in median terms.
Eventually, this salary variance across industries should reduce as adoption
increases over time.

ANALYTICS TOOLS
Salaries across tools is primarily a function on the demand for that tool.
Within data science industry, the demand for tools changes rapidly and this
is evident across the technology stack. So, for statistical analysis there is a
shift towards open source tools. Also Python is gaining more prominence
in recent years. Demand for Big data tools has also moved. Recent trend
is to move away from Hadoop. Visualization tools are even more volatile in
demand.

COMPANY TYPE
Essentially, five types of organizations recruit data scientists in India and its
important to look at salaries for all these company types. Firstly, captive centers
are GIC’s for large MNC’s, setup in India to utilize skillsets available in the country.
Analytics forms one of the core areas that these captive centers work on.
Secondly, consulting firms (Big Four etc.) also provide analytics consultancy and
this can be either to domestic market or to the global clients with delivery centers
in India. Thirdly, domestic Indian firms setup analytics units for internal usage
companywide. Think of it as the end user of analytics from India perspective.
Fourth, large IT service providers have setup analytics competencies and
provide services to global clients around analytics. Fifth, boutique analytics firms
specialize in analytics and provide services around it to the clients.

• Captive analytics centers continue this year by almost 10%. This has

Analytics recruiters prefer PhDs and premier institutes. This is true with
other professions as well, yet with analytics industry there is certainly a
higher demand for PhD professionals that take up roles of data scientists.
Almost 60% of analytics workforce in India have a masters degree and 7% of
workforce is from premier undergrad or postgrad institution. PhD’s form just
1% of analytics workforce.
Also, there seems to be a preference for professionals that have taken a
formal education in analytics in recent years. More so, professionals that
have spent atleast a year in analytics education either in full time or part
time setting as these professionals have a broader understating of various
facets of analytics and data science.

CONCLUSION
IT service providers, that primarily provides services to
analytics clients across the globe showed a downward trend
over the last one year. The study suggests that IT firms have
been affected the most and analytics salaries have gone down
drastically. As opposed to the earlier years where IT service
providers claimed one of the larger portions of analytics salary,
IT firms provided the lowest analytics salaries in India, this year.
The median salaries have decreased this year by almost 10%.
This can be largely attributed to the overall negative impact
on IT sector (such as automation), and increased attrition rate
in IT space.

While IT firms has shown a negative trend, the demand for

data engineering professionals have increased across the
companies, resulting in a significant jump in their salary
structure. Whereas for salaries across analytics skills, advanced
analytics roles and predictive modelling professionals grabbed
the limelight compared to other roles. Despite being one of
the highest earners, the study shows that their salaries have
remained stagnant due to increase in supply. R remains to be
the most in demand with highest salaries, followed by Python.

As for the entry level jobs in analytics, the industry witnessed

an overall decline in their salary structure, whereas the salaries
for mid level experience have remained relatively stable
compared to last year.

RESEARCH
METHODOLOGY
The numbers in this study is a result of extensive research by
Analytics India Magazine, carried out in association with Great
Learning over the last few months. The primary source of
information for this study includes various job portals, salary
aggregators and company websites from where we have
pulled the information to reach suitable conclusion.

It also includes extensive interactive sessions with analytics

professionals, companies and recruiters in the field to get data
on wages of individuals at various levels in an organization.
The data collected was studied for various compensation
trends and practices in the marketplace. The samples were
collected by quizzing the participants on their salary structure,
growth in salary structure over the past few years, skills that
professionals look while hiring for analytics openings, salaries
offered to freshers in the field and that to the senior leaders,
skills that companies prefer to see in candidate’s resume,
amongst others.

The research methodology included furbishing salary details

of analytics professionals across various cities, experience
level, industries such as telecom, retail, banking, automotive,
ecommerce; analytics tools; skills, company type etc. After a
careful collection of information and data, they were classified,
counted and distributed to reach the conclusions as depicted
in the study.
