This method statement is intended to outline the activities for the installation of 2.0
M dia. FRP pipes supply / return to and from United Olefins Complex. The major
work execution include but not limited to trench excavation, dewatering, pipe
laying, backfilling / compaction, FRP pipe joint testing, protection to the existing
utilities, demolition and reinstatement of road Tareeg 195. Scope also include the
demolition, supporting and reinstallation of existing utilities.
2.0 EXECUTION
Prior to the start of the works, necessary working permit including traffic plan for
the closure and demolition of Tareeg 195 shall be secured from the Royal
Commission. Temporary fencing, barricades, preliminary survey works to locate
and identify the location of existing underground utilities. Work shall be carried out
to the line and levels shown in the drawings. Rerouting of traffic and posting of
signs shall be in accordance with the Royal Commission and Traffic requirement.
Street lightings and its accessories shall be removed and reinstalled after
completion of the construction. Permits shall be secured from SCECO prior to
disconnection of power and removal of the poles and cables.
excavation down to the required level and adjust the well pipes
accordingly. Excavation shall be slope 1:1,5 horizontal. and berm
about 1.5 M wide shall be provided. See attach sketch for the
cross section of the trench. Excavated material suitable for
backfill shall be kept on site. Unsuitable and excess excavated
materials shall be properly disposed to dumping site.
2.1.8 After the first stage excavation, drive W8x21 about 6 meter long
pile for the support of pre fabricated structural frames. Top
elevation of pile shall be about 300 mm above the highest utilities
(measured at the top).
2.1.9 Crane erect the prefabricated frames and weld to the supports.
Install the middle beams.
2.1.10 Suspend the utilities using steel angles. While the second stage
excavation is in progress, install knee braces if required. Removal
of supports shall be after backfilling.
3.0 DEWATERING
Well pipes dewatering system shall be adopted, required number of pumps shall
be as per design calculation, and standby pump units shall be installed along both
sides of the trench. Dewatering system shall keep all work area well drained at all
times to ensure the stability of trench wall while the work is in progress.
Dewatering shall be withdrawn only upon sufficient fill above the pipe is completed
to avoid flotation of the pipes. Pumped water shall be lined and thrown to drainage
channel, procedure shall be repetitive throughout the work.
Standard procedures for FRP pipe laying shall be followed. Pipe invert levels shall
be as shown in the drawings. Pipe joint test shall be carried out to the satisfactory
of requirement for testing prior to backfill. This procedure is typical in every section
of the work. Telescopic boom crane shall be utilized in pipe laying. Equipment shall
be positioned at road edge, when necessary. See attach sketch for reference.
4.2.3 When stored directly on ground, the pipe weight should not be
supported by the bell, coupling or any other joint surface. The
pipe should rest on plant ground and should not rest on rocks, or
other hard debris that may cause a pint load sufficient to gouge,
crack or puncture the pipe wall.
4.3.2 Lift pipes with the use of slings, spreader bars, or other handling
devices. Wide straps, belts or other pliable materials is
recommended. Do not allow the straps to deform the pipe.
4.3.3 Avoid the use of steel cables, chains or other lifting devices that
may damage the pipe surface. Only nylon slings shall be use for
pipe lifting.
4.3.5 Individual pipe sections can usually be lifted with two slings
located at the pipe quarter points from both ends. Provide tag line
at one end to control the motion of the pipe during rigging.
4.4.1 Thoroughly clean double bell coupling grooves and rubber gasket
rings to make sure no dirt of oil is present.
4.4.2 Insert the gaskets into the grooves, leaving two or four loops or
rings extending out of the groove, then finally insert the whole
rings into the groove.
4.4.3 Lubricate the gasket rings using a clean cloth, apply thin film of
approved or correct lubricant as per manufacturers
recommendation.
4.4.4 Marked pipe ends to indicate insertion stop position. Lower the
pipe in the trench with the invert level conforming to the required
invert level, slope and alignment.
4.4.7 During homing of the pipe, avoid excessive force that may result
in over-assembled joints or dislodged the gaskets.
Notes: If full entry is not achieved, dis-assemble and clean the joint and re-
assemble.
4.5.2 Special device for testing of double gasket joints shall be use as
recommended by the FRP pipe manufacturers. See attach
excerpt copies for reference.
4.5.4 Joint retest shall be perform after backfilling of the pipes, so that
to ensure that the gasket still seals the joint due to hoop
deflection. If retest fail, the manufacturer’s specification and
recommendation shall be followed for the remedial works to be
undertaken.
5.2 Backfill materials placement shall be in uniform layers of 150 mm thick and
each layers of materials being compacted shall meet the required density,
using appropriate compaction equipment that shall not transmit damaging
shocks to the pipe. Backfill material type shall be as shown in the drawings.
5.3 In this section of work, all the required membrane, filter fabric and warning
tape shall be in place as shown in the drawings.
