All Indian universities demand 5 passes (including language) in IGCSE/ "O" level.
A minimum of 2/3 "A" (Advanced) level passes for all UG degrees; this is a basic requirement issued for
equivalent status to Class XII of our system. According to the specialization of UG subjects, the combination
of subjects may vary, to satisfy the eligibility criteria.
A minimum of 3 "A" (Advanced) level passes along with an AS level pass for English is required for all
professional courses. Some Universities require 4 A level passes along with an AS level pass for English for
the courses that they offer.
Association of Indian Universities, the nodal agency for granting equivalence to foreign qualifications in India
has recently made amendments to IGCSE/O Level equivalence in India.
IGCSE/O Level grade requirements of C and above have been removed. In the past AIU mentioned ‘5 passes
with Grade C and above’ whereas the amendment states that passes in 5 subjects including English will be
considered as equivalent to secondary qualification.

a) IGCSE ESL, EFL and O Level English Language continues to be accepted in India. Please note that AIU
refers to “English” and does not specify ESL or EFL. If it did not accept ESL, it would have specified the
same.
b) There is no change in AS and A Level equivalence.
c) Equivalence of AS English Language to senior secondary English qualification remains unchanged as
long as it is taken in Year 12 of study. Any curriculum to be treated as equivalent to higher secondary needs
to fit into 10+2 years of schooling requirement in India
d) While the 5 subjects requirement including English Language meets the equivalence criteria for
secondary qualification, for purposes of transfer/admission to other exam boards in India, additional criteria
like passing all secondary subjects in a single exam series may apply where relevant. Currently CISCE
accepts candidates who have passed all 5 subjects in a single exam series. State secondary and senior
secondary exam boards that have pass marks at 35 may not accept PUMs below 35
e) With the exception of a handful of Indian universities, most have been accepting candidates without 5
C grades – so this never really prevented earlier candidates from applying for undergraduate courses. What
has changed is for institutions that insisted on AIU equivalence certificate (i.e. Amity University, Manipal for
medicine entry, Flying schools that are under Ministry of Civil Aviation, etc.) candidates will now be able to
get equivalence certificate from AIU and get admission in such institutions. This also applies for all
government jobs and entrance exams like UPSC, etc.
f) Private candidates are not eligible for equivalence certificate from AIU.
