FOREWARD
Climate is a natural resource vital to our well -being,
health and prosperity. Information on climate helps decision
makers and users in taking considered decisions which can
reduce risk and optimize'socio-economic benefits'.
The general enquiries received in any Meteorological
Office from the general public, media and planners are about
the current weather, climate and extreme weather even ts. The
routinely prepared daily/weekly weather reports do not readily
provide the answers to some of the specific queries such as
what has been the highest amount of rainfall and record
temperature the city. With growing awareness, this information
is quite often sought by various users. Efforts have been made
in this publication to bring out comprehensive features of
Climate of Chandigarh so that public, media and planners can
have answers to many of their queries. This publication
contains season wise description of averages and extremes of
temperature, rainfall, humidity, wind. Average and highest
occurrences of special weather phenomena such as heavy
rainfall, thunderstorms, hailstorms, dust storm, squall have
also been described. Average climatic conditions of
Chandigarh on the national festivals like Independence Day and
Republic Day have also been included.
My compliments to the authors and the entire team of
officers and staff of Meteorological Centre, Chandigarh for
bringing the publication which I hope would be a useful
reference to the general public, planners and media.
