THE OVERALL HEAT TRANASFER COEFFICIENT

A wall of 0.5 mt thickness is to be constructed from a material

which has an average thermal conductivity of 1.4 W/mK. The
wall is to be insulated with a material having an average
thermal conductivity of 0.35 W/mK. So that the loss per square
metre will not exceed 1450 W. Assuming the inner and outer
surface temperatures are 1200 0C and 15 0C respectively.
Calculate the thickness of insulation required. (Ans = 0.159
mt.)

Q/A = (T1 –T2)/(L1/K1 +L2/K2)

THE OVERALL HEAT TRANASFER COEFFICIENT

The door of a cold storage plant is made from two 6 mm thick

glass sheets separated by a uniform airgap of 2mm. The
temperature of the air inside the room is -20 0C and the
ambient air temperature is 30 0C. Assuming the heat transfer
coefficient between glass and air to be 23.26 W/mK. Determine
the rate of heat leaking in to the room per unit area of the door.
Neglect convection effects in the air gap .
K glass = 0.75W/mK; K air = 0.02 W/mK.

(Ans = Q/A = 50/0.202 = 247.5 W/m2)
