SPANISH COLONIAL PERIOD
- 1565 Spanish colonization in
the Philippines started during
the time of Miguel Lopez de
Legazpi, the first Spanish
governor general in the
Philippines.
- The Spaniards colonized the
Philippines for more than
centuries.
- The Spanish colonizers wanted
to undermine the native oral
tradition by substituting for it
the story of the Passion of
Christ. However, the native
tradition survived and even
flourished in areas inaccessible
to the Spaniards.
- The church authorities adopted
a policy of spreading the church
doctrines by communicating to
the natives in their own
language.

AMERICAN COLONIAL PERIOD
1607 – Jamestown, The first
permanent English settlement in
America, is established by the London
company in southeast Virginia.
1619 – The house of Burgesses the
first representative assembly in
America, The first African slaves are
brought to Jamestown.
1620 – The Plymouth Colony in
Massachusetts is established by
Piligrims from England.
- Before disembarking from
their ship, the mayflower, 41
male passengers sign the
Mayflower compact, an
agreement that forms the
basis of the colony’s
government.
1650 - Colonial population is
estimated at 50,400
1664 – English seize New Amsterdam
(city and colony) from the Dutch and

1763- French and Indian War: final
conflict in the ongoing struggle
between the British and French for
control of eastern north America.

leading to intense public protests.
1773- Boston Tea Party, Group of
colonial patrols disguised as Mohawk

JAPANESE COLONIAL PERIOD
-Japanese occupied the Philippines for
over three years, until the surrender of
Japan. A highly effective guerrilla
campaign by Philippine resistance
forces controlled sixty percent of the
islands, mostly jungle and mountain
area. MacArthur supplied them by
submarine, and sent reinforcements
and officers. Filipinos remained loyal to
the united states, partly because of the
American guarantee of independence,
and also because the Japanese had
pressed large numbers of Filipinos into
work details and even put young
Filipino women into brothels’.
-War came unexpectedly to the
Philippines.
-Japan opened a surprise attack on the
Philippines on December 8, 1941, when
Japan attack without warning, just ten
hours after the attacked on Pearl
Harbor. Japanese troops attacked the
islands in many places and launched a
pincer drive on Manila. Aerial
bombardment was followed by
landings of ground troops in Luzon. The
defending Philippines and united state
troops were under the command of
general MacArthur.
-During the Japanese occupation of the
Philippines during World War II, The
Japanese influence the government in
the Philippines by enforcing a strict
curfew, adding Japanese currency,
instituting a military government
system by half. The occupation also
cost the lives of over a million people in
the Philippines.
