Independent Station Expectations

You are to work silently and independently for the duration of the rotation. If you have a
question, raise your hand so Ms. Chavez can assist you. Do not ask your neighbors.

If Ms. Chavez cannot promptly assist you, move on to another part of the assignment,
leaving room for what is confusing.

Use this Google Timer to time yourself for each section. Make sure to turn the sound off.

I will do 2 spot checks during your work time to make sure you are actively working. I
included a reminder for when these checks will occur in your directions.

Part 1 - Vocabulary (5 min)

RIGHT SIDE
1. Below the objective, write “VOCABULARY.”
2. Glue the following table in below the vocabulary title. Either draw a sketch to
represent the vocabulary words or write the definitions in your own words.

Word  Definition  Drawing/Definition in

your own words

amylase  an enzyme found in saliva that breaks

starch down into simple sugars

glucose  the main type of sugar in the blood and is

the major source of energy for the body's
cells

pigment  an organic compound that gives color to

plant or animal tissues

chlorophyll  green pigment found in the chloroplasts of

higher plants and in cells of
photosynthetic microorganisms

Part 2 - Reading (10 min)

RIGHT SIDE
1. Write “PHOTOSYNTHESIS INTRODUCTION INFORMATION.”
2. Glue following excerpt in on the right side of your notebook. Then, read and
annotate it using the CATCH annotations Criteria For Success.
3. Excerpt:

Chloroplasts are structurally similar to and likely evolved from photosynthetic

bacteria. The structural organization of these cells allows for the chemical
reactions of photosynthesis. Leaves are the major locations of photosynthesis.
Their green color is from chlorophyll, the green pigment within chloroplasts.
Light energy absorbed by chlorophyll drives the synthesis of organic molecules in
the chloroplast. CO2 enters and O2 exits the leaf through microscopic pores
called stomata. The chlorophyll is in the membranes of thylakoids (connected
photosystems in the chloroplast); thylakoids may be stacked in columns called
grana. Chloroplasts also contain stroma, a dense fluid where the Calvin Cycle, or
light independent reactions.

Part 3 - Reflections (15 min)

January 23 + 24

LEFT SIDE
1. Write “PHOTOSYNTHESIS INTRODUCTION REFLECTIONS.”
2. Glue in the following questions and respond to them in black ink.

1. Consider the organelle illustrated in Model 1.

a. What is the name of this organelle?

b. Is this organelle more likely to be found in animal cells or plant cells?

2. The structures inside the organelle in Model 1 are called thylakoids. What compound
necessary for photosynthesis is contained in the thylakoids?

3. Consider the chemical reaction in Model 1. This represents photosynthesis.
a. What substances are the reactants in photosynthesis? Include the name and chemical
formula of each substance in your answer.

b. Where in the organelle are these molecules stored before they are used in
photosynthesis?

c. What is the energy source for photosynthesis?

4. Photosynthesis occurs in two parts—the light-dependent reactions and the
light-independent reactions.
a. What is another name for the light-independent reactions?

b. In what part of the chloroplast do the light-dependent reactions occur?

c. In what part of the chloroplast do the light-independent reactions occur?

5. Considering your answers to Question 4, what compound is best able to absorb the light
energy from the Sun and convert it into chemical energy?

6. What substances are produced during photosynthesis? Include the name and chemical
formula of each substance in your answer.
