Satellite Communication

(SATCOM)
System

FOR TRAINING PURPOSE ONLY 1

1
Introduction

• A communications satellite is an artificial satellite stationed in

space for the purposes of telecommunications using radio at
microwave frequencies.
• Most communications satellites use geosynchronous orbits or
near-geostationary orbits, although some recent systems use
low Earth-orbiting satellites.
• A place on the ground with satellite dishes used to transmit to
or receive from these is called an earth station.

Introduction

The Aero-HSD+ (Thrane & Thrane) system makes it possible

to communicate from virtually anywhere in the world using
the Inmarsat® Swift64 and H+ services established by
Inmarsat.

The Inmarsat Swift64 (also called High Speed Data or HSD)

and H+ services are based on 4 Geostationary satellites
situated above the equator. Each satellite covers a certain area
(footprint) and supports a number of powerful spot-beams
making the service available in virtually anywhere on the earth
between approximately 70°N and 70°S.

Introduction
The Aero-H+ part provides global voice, fax, PC modem data
communication.
The Swift64 part is for dedicated high-speed data requirements.

PBX
The built-in PBX Unit connects up to four 4-wire handsets and
two direct 2-wire POTS interfaces for faxes, PC modems,
auxiliary phones etc.
The Earth Stations
The gateway between the public network and the satellites
is operated by a LES (Land Earth Station) for the high speed
data communication or GES (Ground Earth Station) for the
global voice, fax and PC modem data capabilities. The LESs
and GESs are run by different operators around the world. 6

Satellite Data Unit (SDU) TT-5035A:
A Satellite Data Unit (SDU) TT-5035A – is a controlling unit of
Aero HSD+ system. It provides interface for four 4-wire
cradles, two 2-wire cradles, and Ethernet/MPDS interface.

High power Amplifier (HPA)

TT-5014A :
High power Amplifier (HPA) is a linear
power amplifier capable of amplifying the
transmission signals of all Aero HSD+
channels.

9
Configuration module (CM) TT-5035A-001:
Configuration module contains all system & user settings.
Configuration module is designed to plug ‘in’ module for SDU
making it easier to replace the SDU while retaining all system
configurations.

Diplexer Low Noise Amplifier (DLNA):

Diplexer low noise amplifier (DLNA) amplifies the incoming signal
from antenna and sends to SDU and connects the out going
signal from HPA to Antenna. It act as guard to prevent out put
signal from being received by SDU

10
Handset (TT-5620-A) and Cradle
(TT-5622-A)
Handset (TT-5620) and Cradle (TT05622)
are full featured. Handset (TT-5620) is used
to configure the system and to make and
receive call.

Bus Data Converter (BDC4105-001-001)

SDU provide RS422 interface. The bus data converter
converts RS422 to RS232 data format and vice versa. RS-
232 side of this converter is connected to Laptop/PC.

11

11
High Gain Antenna (HGA-7000):
The High Gain Antenna (HGA) is low
profile, electronically steered SATCOM
antenna, using phased array beam
forming technology. It performs both
transmit and receive functions.

The HGA-7000 has following

functionalities
- High Gain Antenna
- Beam Steering
It also contains an integrated active
GPS antenna providing an GPS signal
to a GPS receiver inside BSU Antenna Over roof

Making an H+ Call from the Handset
Do as follows:
1. Type in the phone number with the prefix 00.
2. Press OK or # to activate the call.
3. Hang up by pressing or placing the handset in the cradle.
When the call is terminated, the display shows the duration of
the call.
Answering a Call
Answering a call can be done in two ways:
• If the handset is in the cradle, simply take the handset from the
cradle to answer the call.
• If the handset is out of the cradle, press to answer the call.
While making call ensure that the aircraft is clear of any physical
obstructions and has a clear view of the equatorial sky 28

28
Ground to Air Broadcast Call
One way to make a ground to air call to the Aero-HSD+ system is
to use the AES ID for a broadcast call.
From a ground phone dial +87x 5 <AESID>.
The AESID is the ICAO address in octal numbers. The “5” before
the AESID indicates the Aero H+ service.

Ground to Air Call Using the DDI Numbers

From a ground phone dial: +87x 5 <DDI> <Terminal Number>
Terminal number 03 operator 1
04 operator 2 at Elta console

29
PC connection
There are two types of connection that are used for internet
browsing one is ISDN and another is MPDS.
The main difference between ISDN and MPDS is that with
ISDN you are charged for connection time and with MPDS you
are charged for Mbits transferred.

Internet connection thru MPDS:

Connect Laptop/PC to an RS-232 port of converter which is
available on the right side of Elta Console, which is connected
to the RS-422 port of the SDU.
Double Click on Inmarsat shortcut on desktop.
Type user name and password, then click on Connect.
Now click on internet explorer shortcut on desktop and browse
internet.

30
TROUBLESHOOTING
In case of a fault situation, first make sure that the
transmission path is not obstructed, e.g. by buildings if the
aircraft is on ground.

The Aero-HSD+ system has different means of status signaling:

Error Messages: If some failure occur the corresponding 4
digit error code is displayed on handset screen and two most
significant digits of error code are displayed on front panel of
SDU.
LEDs: SDU and HPA are equipped with LEDs for signaling
their status.

For error related to 4 digit code refer installation manual.
