Exercise 5

Read the following story, underline the unknown words, and try to guess their meaning.

ON VACATION IN CARTAGENA

Hello mother! This is Jaime, and I’m writing you this time from our
hotel to tell you about our vacation in Cartagena de Indias in Colombia.

My whole family is with me and we even brought our dog.

The weather isn’t very good today, in fact, it’s rather cold and cloudy.
The children are in their room playing cards and watching TV. Right now, it’s very wet and rainy.

My wife is in the restaurant eating lunch, but the food

here is very expensive, and it isn’t very good.

Our hotel room is nice. In spite of the broken bathroom

window, it’s air conditioned, has two beds, and a big flat
TV screen.

People from the hotel are saying that the weather is

uncertain because sometimes it’s sunny, cloudy, windy,
or rainy. We’re waiting to go to the beach.

Ok mom! I’m going to the beach with my children now

because the weather is changing for the better, and the sun finally came
out.

See you soon.

Love, Jaime.

CHRISTMAS EVE

Hello! My name is Laura. Today, I’m with all my family and some friends, we’re at a
very popular restaurant in our city. We want to celebrate Christmas Eve together. We’re
almost 30 people. There are three different tables in the restaurant for all the family.
I’m at one of the tables with my father, my mother, my aunt Luz, her husband William,
and their two children my cousins Pablo and Diana; I love them very much, but Diana
is my favorite cousin. We play together when she comes to my house during the
weekends. We like to sing English songs together.

Today my father wants to eat Mexican food, he enjoys eating this type of food,
and his favorite being “Tacos”, He doesn’t like spicy food most of the time, and
Mexican food is very spicy. My mother is thinking about two different foods, American or Italian. She
says American food is very cheap, but this time she wants to eat Italian food. At this specific restaurant,
Italian food is very expensive.

My brother doesn’t know what to order, he says he wants to eat French food, but he’s not sure. My
aunt Luz and her husband want to eat Chinese food. My cousin Pablo doesn’t like Chinese food; so he
wants to eat only a hamburger with soda. Diana and I want to eat Colombian food; we really like “Bandeja
Paisa”. Right now, the waiter is taking our order, and he’s saying the specials today are delicious. He has
many different orders from my family, but he is a friendly waiter, he smiles all the time.

Kansas City. He has a lot of things to do every day, but all the things he has to do
are the same day by day.
His day starts at 4:50 am when his alarm rings. He doesn’t wake up immediately. He sleeps 5
more minutes, and when the alarm rings for the second time, he gets up at once.

pants, his socks, his shoes, and finally his shirt. It takes him twenty minutes to get dressed.
At 5:30 he goes to the kitchen and prepares his breakfast; he doesn’t like to have breakfast at

at 10:05, and it finishes at 11:45 am. When he leaves the classroom, he immediately goes to the
cafeteria and buys his lunch, because he only has 20 minutes to eat.
When he finishes his lunch, he is ready to go to work; so he has to walk 7 blocks to get to the
metro station. From the metro station to his office, it takes him 35 minutes, and he must be in his
office by 12:45 pm; which means, he must run from the metro station to his office to be on time.
Mr. Busy works all day from 1:00 pm to 9:30 pm, and when he finishes his busy day at work, he
has to take a bus home; sometimes he gets the bus at 9:35 pm, and sometimes he gets the bus at
9:40 pm.
When Mr. Busy gets home, he greets his wife, daughter, mother, both brothers, and his sister.
His wife makes him dinner and they talk about their day while they eat together.
Every night, before going to sleep; Mr. Busy dedicates some time playing with his one-month old

THE CIRCUS

Hello! I’m Kevin. In my city there’s a circus. Every year, the circus visits my city, and a lot of people
go to see the spectacular shows that the circus offers.
My best friend Maria, tells me I have to go to the circus to see the shows. She says there’s a man
who can jump the rope on an elephant’s back. She also says, there are 5 white tigers and the trainer
puts his head into the tigers’ mouths, and they do not move. Even the same man puts his head into
a crocodile’s mouth, it’s awesome. People are scared of that and they shout of fear, but at the end
they clap of happiness.
The owner of the circus is an old man, he is amazing. He can do many different tricks. He can go
along the tightrope riding a bike and juggling 6 balls at the same time. He can even jump from a
tower of 50 meters high to a small pool on the floor; besides, he rides on a horse backwards, and he
jumps from that horse to other 3 horses while they run around the track.
People are very happy with the circus. Around 1100 people visit the circus every day. The owner
of the circus is looking for people to work with him. He’s looking for people with amazing skills that
can do many tricks for the show. I know a friend that maybe can work there. I have to call him right
now.
