Personal Essay
The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time
when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the
experience?
As I sat waiting for my recess to commence, my English teacher popped open the

classroom door and called me outside. She wanted to know if I would agree to

being cast in a play. I said Yes before she could even bat an eyelid. The onset of

puberty had given me the gift of a throaty voice, and thus, my teachers were

W
forever willing to give me the stage.

As a child, I had stage fright. I dreaded public speaking. Even though I was

academically sound, my fear of large groups and anxious nature, kept me away

IE
from all kinds of classroom activities and discussions. During middle school, this

fear transitioned into an intense phobia. I experienced my first panic attack while
EV
standing on stage, trying to fight my fear of public speaking.

When the opportunity to become part of a play presented itself to me, my first

thought was: I couldn't do it. However, I didn't want to go through life, defeated by
PR

fear. I, thus, without thinking much said yes. We had only a week to prepare

ourselves, and our team was up against six other teams who had been practising for

over a month. We decided to go with Shakespeare's 'Much Ado About Nothing.' I

was playing Claudio, a young emotional jock. As we began practice, I realized not

only was I a bad actor, but I also kept forgetting my lines. Early modern English is

tough. I stayed up all night every day of the week and repeatedly rehearsed every

dialogue until I could say every dialogue even while sleeping.

The day of the competition arrived, and I was nervous, anxious, and sweaty. I

wanted to quit, but something inside me kept me going. We were the last to

perform, and as soon as I walked to the stage, the nervousness began to crawl back

in. I started saying my dialogues but kept forgetting them midway. I persisted for a

few minutes, but then I blanked out. An eerie silence filled the room for twenty

seconds and was broken by my partner, who finished my dialogue and ended the

scene.

When I climbed down from the stage, I felt terrible. The fact that I had forgotten

my lines troubled me far less than the fact that I was the person who messed it up

for others. My father, later, made me feel better about who I was when he made me

W
realize that even in my worst moment, I was thinking of others and not me. We did

not win, but I realized every experience in life is precious. The experience made

me realize that nothing, ever, goes to waste. Even when we are talking or listening,

IE
our mind grows and accumulates information. Whatever we do adds to the way we

grow. The pace of growth may vary from person to person, but the act of growing

itself is the same for all.

EV
After the play, I decided to do whatever it took to overcome my fears. I began

actively participating in school competitions. I forgot my dialogues again several

times, and then one day, I didn't. The day I didn't forget my dialogues, I overcame

my fear. My struggles, albeit small, proved to me the that most important

PR

relationship I have is the one I share with myself. They also taught me to approach

people with a kind heart when they are dealing with a difficult situation. Forgetting

my dialogues on stage taught me that it is vital to live every day with courage,

confidence, authenticity, vulnerability and joy.

I interned for Femme First Foundation during the summers of 2019 which is is a non-partisan, non-profit
organisation committed to amplifying women's leadership. I reached out to them looking for opportunities and
community service. During my 2 months tenure of internship here, I designed logos for the organisation and
learned various new concepts. My design skills were vastly improved. As the organisation was new they didn't

have their own website. So I designed the website for Femme First Foundation. The founder of the company was
quite impressed with my work. I designed various user interfaces, certificates, and videos whilst here for the
organisation. I learned how nonprofit works and as we know the status of women in the world and how they are
discriminated against. I supported the organisation even after my internship was over and helped them in
designing certain things.

Throughout the engagement I learned a lot and this had a huge impact over my skills. My skills majorly improved
and I gained a different perspective towards equality of women in the world. I learned how unfair the world is and it
our responsibility to make this world a better place for the upcoming generation.

Writing
Why Purdue?
I have been commonly known as a computer nerd in my friends’ circle. My dream has always been to be known
for my knowledge expertise in this field and I am confident that Purdue is the best STEM college for me to
showcase my talent. I wish to join the Honors College, where I hope to immerse myself in a group of similarly
motivated scholars. And it is not just the academic possibilities that await me but the chance to join the famous
athletics club at Purdue is a major attraction for me.
Why Major?
I remember my father introducing me to PC frameworks in his office during my childhood. Amused, I bombarded
him with questions and thereon the seed of this dream was planted in me - that I want to know all about
computers. When I got my personal computer, I would sit on it for long hours, exploring new things every day. I
learned my first programming language - Visual Basics, in sixth grade and ever since my love for the subject has
never stopped breathing.
