Walk with nature

She is my Mother
To Build a Fire
To Build a Fire Author: Jack London

Published: 1908

Man Vs. Nature

Characters: Man- confidently stubborn because he ignores the piece of advice from the old timer.
Perseverant, he keeps trying despite difficulties.

Dog- loyal, for he accompanies the man to travel Yukon in spite of danger. Old-timer from sulphur

creek- wise and caring

The boys- friends waiting in the mining camp

Lesson: People should not think they are more powerful than nature. In addition, people should listen to others
who have more experience than they do.

Symbolism In this story, fire represents life. The story makes the readers somehow feel how important fire is. The
man tries as hard as he could to build a fire because he knows that the presence of fire is what could make him
survive in such a cold day. Fire is definitely essential, which is why the absence of it could bring misfortune to the
man. Hands, on the other hand, represent power. The man could not kill his dog because of his numb hands.
One is powerless and defenseless without having much control of hands.

Fire - life, human survival Cold, gray (namention sa first part sa story)- death, corpse

Dog- true to his nature Camp- safety, hope and survival

A man, along with his dog, wanted to get to a mining camp where his friends had been waiting for him. He
knew that once he got to the mining camp, he would enjoy delicious bacon and the warmth of campfires.
Before the man made his journey, an old-timer reminded that under no circumstance should one go to Yukon.
Nevertheless, the man ignored the advice owing to his notion that the old timer was just womanish and
powerless. He knew that there was no sun while he was traveling. The absence of the sun did not seem to worry
the man. It was only the dog who appeared to perceive the danger of the very cold weather in Yukon.unyaa
ang ice ba so nabasa jud iyang tiil nya feel niya nafrozen iyang tiil (danghag man), so wa syay mahims kundi
magbuild og fire para mauga iyang tiil. Nagkatugnaw man ang panahon nakahuna huna syas gisulti sa old-
timer niya pero gibalewala ra niya kay kaya lage kuno niya. Nya nasobraan man kadako ang fire so na-melt
Wa na pa jud syay lain posporo, mao to ngita sya lain way para
mainitan iyang lawas kay wa namay lain way para makabuhat syag fire. Nya kahuna huna mana sya nga
patyon niya iyang iro para adto ibutang iya kamot sa warm body daw sa iro. Iya gitawa ang iro nya ka-sense
man ug danger ang iro, nahadlok but iya gitawag pina-isog na voice so niduol ang iro and mao to iya gi-
wrestling pero wa man japon ni-effect. So iya gisuwayan ug patay gamit ang knife, nya sa kabugnaw di
naman halos malihok iyang kamot so wa japon niya napatay. Mao to ni-give up nalang sya about sa
pagpatay sa iro. Nakahuna huna nasad sya nga magdagan padung sa mining camp para mabalik ang iya
blood circulation sa lawas. Unya mura naman na ug nafrozen iyang tiil so galisud na syag dagan, pahuway sya
kadyot nya mulakaw na unta sya padung, natumba siya kay di na kalihok iya tiil sa kabugnaw. Nagpanic na
sya, nitry syag dagan nya natumba nasad.
THE END.

The seasons in "Autumn Song"

-represent the current physical and mental state of the poet. The warmth of summer is represented as
happiness and joy for the poet. While winter signals cold and dark times. "The whole of winter enters in my
Being- - pain" states the pain of winter. Winter being a chilly and gloomy season, we are able to safetly make a
comparison with the poet and the season. Autumn however is only mentions to describe the sensation of being
in-between summer and winter. "They nail for one a coffin lid, or sound a knell-- For whom? Autumn now-- and
summer yesterday!" proves that 'Autumn' represents the anxiety within the poet

The Song of Autumn focused on the speakers feelings toward his life anxieties and negativities which give him
an idea of becoming so attached to the spleen side of the world. As described in the first stanza "Soon we will
plunge into the cold-darkness"It's clear that in his mind, we are all included in this situation that the nature's end
is near and he sees a lot situational problems. In this poem it evolves only in 3 seasons wherein there is a vey
short time for enjoyment (summer) and autumn is the longest part which represent the current physical and
mental state of the poet. He himself tells how he had faced his axieties. The whole winter enters the state of
having pain throughout his life being chilly and gloomy season.

help me in my agony. Behold I, Popocatepetl, who saw the King of Everything fashioning the stars, I, who knew
the sun in his childhood, I, Popocatepetl, appeal to you, little animal. I am hungry.”Then, the unexpected
happened. The little animal asked for payment right away. Flustered, Popocatepetl threatened the little
animal’s life which made it give up and suggested that they make wings for Popocatepetl. But, as the wings
are huge ones, he told them that he’d be brining his comrades along to build the wings.Betrayal after another,

Structures of Modification

- is composed by "Head" and "Modifier."

Modification - a word or combination of words in which one grammatical element-- Head, SINGLE WORD/ONE
WORD (e.g., noun) is modified by another-- Modifier, COULD BE A WORD OR A PHRASE/PREDICATE (e.g., an
adjective). In diagramming, an arrowhead (>/<) to indicate grammatical tie of modification.

To determine if a word/phrase is a modifier try to remove that word/phrase and see if the sentence still makes
sense without it. If it does, the word/phrase probably is a modifier.

Premodifiers - modifiers that appear before the head.

Postmodifiers - appears after the Head.
**Modifiers can also modify other modifiers.**

SINGLE-WORD MODIFIERS
Examples:

1. The tall red barn.

2. The big, black dog.

~ Try to find the difference between the two examples. In the 1st example the coordinated adjectives are not
separated with a comma while in the 2nd example it is.

In example 1, a person could be talking about a barn that is tall and red in which we would be using a comma.
Or as the given example, one could talking about a red barn that is tall.

In example 2, one could be talking about a black dog that is big (no comma). Or, one could be talking about
a dog that is big and/also black (with comma).

3. Recklessly, they flew downhill

4. Disney's manic hippos, dancing.

In example one, you could see that the modifier, "recklessy," does not only modify the verb, "flew," but the
whole predicate. If you notice, the adverb (the words that describes the verb) is movable. We could instead
say:
• They flow downhill recklessly.
IF "recklessly" was intended to modify only the word "flew", then it would be next to it. ----- > They recklessly flew
downhill.

~ The comma that is put after the word "recklessy" indicates that the adverb not only modifies the word "flew,"
but the whole predicate/predicationJust like the 3rd example, the comma actually separates the modifier
"dancing" from the head "hippos." It is an indication that dancing does not only modifies the hippos, but the
whole predication, Disney's manic hippos.
