Drain — A conduit, channel or pipe for the carriage of storm


water, sewage, waste water or other water-borne wastes in a
building drainage system.

Drainage — The removal of any liquid by a system


constructed for the purpose.

Trap — A fittings or device so designed and constructed as to


provide, when properly vented, a liquid seal which will prevent
the back passage of air without materially affecting the flow of
sewage or waste water through it.

Manhole — An opening by which a man may enter or leave a


drain, a sewer or other closed structure for inspection, cleaning
and other maintenance operations, fitted with suitable cover.

Potable Water — Water which is satisfactory for drinking,


culinary and domestic purposes and meets the requirements of
the Authority.

Service Pipe — Pipe that runs between the distribution main


in the street and the riser in case of a multi-storeyed building
or the water meter in the case of an individual house and is
subject to water pressure from such main.

Sewer — A pipe or conduit, generally closed, flowing full for


carrying sewage and/ or other waste liquids.

Soil Pipe — A pipe that conveys the discharge of water closets


or fixtures having similar functions, with or without the
discharges from other fixtures.

Soil Waste — The discharge from water closets, urinals, slop


hooper, stable yard or cowshed gullies and similar appliances.

Surface Water — Natural water from the ground surface,


paved areas and roofs.

Surface Water Drain — A drain conveying surface water


including storm water.
