I SPIRITUAL WRITINGS
(Translation of the book of Fernando Rielo “En el Corazón del Padre” (“In the Heart of the Father”)
FOREWORD
Spiritual Sensitivity regarding what is Heavenly:
The myth of the cavern: application to the ego and to the spirit.
Plato’s myth of the cavern describes a dark, shadow cavern where humanity is
imprisoned. Individuals, prisoners from birth, chained so that they cannot see
the bonfire of light that floods over their backs, can only contemplate their
shadows and the shadows of the objects they are carrying, projected at the
bottom of the cave. It is a world of phantasms and of fragility, of contingency
and indigence.
This myth contains a philosophy of life. In it, humanity appears as a community of interests, excelling among them the
power to survive within the cavern. The human beings ought to understand each other in order to experience the least
possible suffering. Tolerance and intolerance are the two poles between which they move around. Some are more
tolerant, others less so. The shadows of the cave are blurred with the ray of light, forming a certain clarity, almost
opaque light, enough to see the projection of the shadows, subject to all
kinds of interpretations. It is the world of doxa, where everything is
opinion, convenience, adjusting to some circumstances – the word
circumstance was adopted by Ortega y Gasset without risking to leave
the cave completely–.
Behold one of these individuals of this cavern is freed and, placed facing
the light, contemplates a new, deeper reality and ground of the first made up only of appearances. This man is led
toward the exterior of the cavern through a rough and steep ascent. It is a human being who is going to leave the
cavern, the world of shadows, of interests, of intolerances, of the great misery that derives from the mere fact of
survival. After much effort, he manages to get out of the cavern and he finds himself in the Olympus –what we would
call heaven– . Naturally, this other world is of greater reality, it is a world of being that is marvelously existential. Here
everything is authentic, everything is ousia; here this is no opinion, everything is evidence. In this heaven, everything is
what it is, what it should be, what it must be, what cannot be any other way, simply because it is.
This extraordinary man, a kind of saint, hero, scientist, feels obliged to go back down again into the interior of the
cavern to free his old companions, and tell them to make the same effort to get out of the cavern so they can see what
he has seen: the most pure existence, immutable, what is always the way it is; in a word, the true life. Life is outside, it is
what he saw; what you live inside the cavern is death….
