The EU is facing the worst migrants’ crisis since the second World War. Wars in Irak and Syria, unrest
in the African continent have spurred an exodus of refugees.
Last year, more than 170,000 people arrived in Italy by boat fleeing violence, persecution and poverty.
Migrants pay people traffikers between £2,000 and £3,0000 for passage to Europe.
Some migrants told us « once you’ve paid you cannot go back » Flavio Di Giacomo, International
Organisation for Migration .Gangs treat them as virtual slaves, making them work for months to earn
enough money to cross to the EU. « They slap you , even if you want to urinate, sometimes they refuse »
Ebrima Jaiteh, Migrant.
Since 2013, hundreds have died from perilous sea voyages to places such as Sicily, Lampedusa and
Greece. The Italian navy patrols the coast to rescue migrants adrift at sea or stranded in the
treacherous waters. Migrants are also entering the EU by road and rail.
In August, Austrian police found 71 migrants dead from suffocation inside an abandoned lorry.
Hungary has built a fence along its Serbian border to curtail the thousands of migrants entering.
Britain and France have increased security measures around the Channel Tunnel in response to migrants
attempting to smuggle themselves to the UK hidden in lorries.
« We are going to put more fencing, more resources, more sniffer dog teams, more assistance in any
way we can in terms of resources . » David Cameron, British Prime Minister.
But as desperate refugees search for new routes into Europe, the death continues to rise.

The U.N. says there are 60 million people displaced worldwide — the most since the U.N. started keeping records
and the most since World War II. The U.N. has counted 15 new conflicts in the past five years, and the big one is
Syria. More than 11 million Syrians have fled or been driven from their homes in that country's civil war since it
started in 2011.Then there's the Islamic State surge in Iraq, where 3 million people have been displaced since
January 2014. Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Libya, Nigeria and other countries are wracked by war or insurgency.
Many people are also fleeing Eritrea, a country that's not at war but that is run by a repressive regime.

Some settle in new countries or find new places even in their own countries. But many can't do either. Turkey and
Lebanon, for example, have taken in around 3 million Syrian refugees between them. But both have restrictive laws
keeping the refugees from earning a living. So, many are on the move. Source : NPR.org (National Public Radio)
