Time: 3 Hours, Max Marks: 90 '
Note: Attempt all questions
Assume missing data suitably (if any)
Draw neat and labeled diagrams wherever required
Q1(a) Explain the importance of Weber's 'Material Index' and Sargent's 'Location Factor' (8)
theories in selecting the most suitable site for any industry.

(b) A larger and more modern main post office is to be constructed at a new location. The (8)
coordinates and trips per day to and from the seven mail source points and the current
main post office, M, are shown in table below. M will continue to act as a mail source
point after relocation.

(i) Calculate the center of gravity as a possible location for the new facility (round to
the nearest whole number)
(ii) Compare the load-distance scores for the new location in part (i), and the current
location using rectilinear distances.

Q.2(a) For two types of products: one is ball bearing and other is large boiler, how the two (6)
products affect the plant layout of the two companies for effective manufacturing
system?

(b) A toy manufacturer intends to make 447 pieces per day. He has identified 12 work (14)
elements with the following precedence restrictions & durations. Assuming that, the
normal working time is 71/2 hours per day with 15 minutes break in the middle of
morning & afternoon sessions. The tasks involved with the respective task times are
indicated in the Table shown below:
• Draw the precedence diagram & design the assembly line for the toys.
• Compute the efficiency, balance delay for your design.
• Show all the workstations on the precedence diagram, also show balancing
losses graphically

Q.3(a) What is the need for developing Computerized Layout Algorithms? Discuss briefly the (6)
ALDEP technique for developing the layout along with its advantages & limitations.

P.T.O.
(b) Load shipments among work centers (A) through (L) are tentatively located as shown, (14)
are given in the table below. (i) Assuming transportation cost of Rs. 1/- per unit
distance for each load, develop a good layout (cross movements allowed). (ii) Suppose
the cost is Rs. 4/- per unit distance from work centre E & Rs. 1/- per unit distance for
each load from A & C, find a good layout. Calculate total cost of transportation.

Q.4(a) What are the various factors to be considered for determining the number of machines (10)
required? A company plans to manufacture four products, A, B, C and D and has
process layout. Production details are given as under:
A D
Set up time(min) 30 45 60 15
Std. time/ unit (min) 1.20 1.00 0.75 0.50
No. of set ups/ month 8 12 12 16
Monthly demand(units) 2700 3600 4500 1800
Assuming 90% production recovery, calculate the number of machines required of a
particular type, if the plant runs for single shift of 8 hours each day.

(b) How will you differentiate between the Job-shop & Batch production systems. (6)

Q5(a) What is unit load? How is it designed? What are the various guidelines for unit load sizes (6)
specifications?

(b) Explain briefly the salient features of any three of the following material handling (12)
equipments:
• Slat Conveyors
• Fork Lift Trucks
• Bridge Cranes
• Vibrating conveyors
