Method

Research Design

The descriptive method of research was employed in

this study. Descriptive research is conclusive in nature, as

opposed to exploratory. This means that descriptive research

gathers quantifiable information that can be used for

statistical inference on your target audience through data

analysis. As a consequence, this type of research takes the

form of closed-ended questions, which limits its ability to

provide unique insights (Penwarden, 2014).

Participants

The participants of the study were the Senior High

School students at PHINMA Araullo University. Random

Sampling was used in the selection of sample. Table 1

presents the participants of the study.

Materials and Instruments

The researcher used questionnaire as the primary

source of information. The first part of instrument

determined the profile of students in terms of age, gender,

grade, and strand. The second part identifies the impacts of

Facebook on grade 12 SHS students in academic performance at

PHINMA ARAULLO UNIVERSITY-South in terms of the following:

Sub variable 2

CREATIVITY – 5 items

PLOT ANALYSIS –5 items

VOCABULARY – 5 items

SPEAKING SKILLS – 5 items

This questionnaire is adapted after the study of Wahab

et al. (2013) in managing learner’s behavior in classroom.

The third part of questionnaire determined the impacts

of Facebook on grade 12 students in academic performance at

PHINMA ARAULLO UNIVERSITY-South. This questionnaire is

researcher made and was subjected for test retest method for

reliability analysis.

The respondents were presented 5 responses for the

incidence of disruptive behaviors and practice of positive

reinforcement strategies using the following guide:

4 – Often

Validity and Reliability of Instrument

Test-retest method was used to determine the impacts of

Facebook on grade 12 shs students in academic performance at

PHINMA ARAULLO UNIVERSITY-South. One hundred (100) Selected

Senior High School in PHINMA AU Senior High School were used

as respondents in determining the reliability of the

instrument.

Data Collection

Permission to conduct the study was obtained from the

instructor. The researcher personally administered the

questionnaire to ensure the full cooperation of the

respondents and that directions were properly discussed.

Interviews and observations were also utilized to validate

the findings of the study.

Data Analysis

The data gathered was analyzed using the appropriate

statistical tools in order to give meaningful descriptive

interpretation of the results and findings of the study. The

following tools were utilized:

1. The profile of students in terms of (a) age, (b) gender

and (c) strand were analyzed using percentage distribution.

The following formula for percentage was used:

Where:

P = percentage

f = frequency

N = total number of cases

2. To answer the second and third problem which are; “How

may the Impact of Facebook be described in terms of: (a)

communication; (b) usage and (c) social skills” and “How may

the Academic Performance of the grade 12 student be

described in terms of: (a) speaking skills; (b) behavior;

(c) GPA/grades; and (d) participation; Weighted mean was

employed.

Formula for weighted mean is as follows:

Where:

= weighted mean.

∑fx = sum of the product of frequency times x, weight

∑f = sum of the frequency or total number of cases

2. 80 – 2.59 – Seldom

3. 60 – 3.39 – Sometimes

4. 40 – 4.19 – often

5. 20 – 5.00 – Always

To answer the fourth and fifth questions which are: “Is there a

significant relationship between Impact of Facebook and Student’s

Academic Performance” and “Is there a significant relationship

between Impact of Facebook and Student’s Academic Performance”

the Chi-square analysis was employed.

Formula for chi-square test is as follows:

Where:

X2 = chi square

fo = observed frequency

fe = expected frequency

After doing the statistical measures, data gathered

were used for comparison purposes and to easily interpret if
