CE 631 – Advanced Steel Design – Fall 2017 Assigned: 9/26/17

Due: 10/10/17

HOMEWORK #4 (60 Points)

1. Using LRFD, select the most economical section with Fy = 50 ksi and assume full lateral
bracing for the compression flanges. Service loads have been provided and beam selfweight
is not included.

2. Determine Mn and Mn/ for a W21x73 used as a beam with an unbraced length of the
compression flange of 6, 12, and 22 ft. Use A992 steel and Cb = 1.0.

3. Solve for the effective length “K” value for the following beam-column with the boundary
conditions shown. Also solve for Pcrit and vmax.

4. Use loads and moments obtained from the requirements of the Direct Analysis Method. A
15 ft. long W10 x 54 beam-column is part of a braced frame and supports service loads of PD
= 100 k and PL = 120 k. These loads are applied to the member at its upper end with an
eccentricity of 2 in. so as to cause bending about the major axis of the section. Check the
adequacy of the member if it consists of 50 ksi steel. Assume Cb = 1.0 and Cmx = 1.0. The
loads and moments were obtained from a first-order analysis and the approximate analysis
method (Appendix 8 of AISC Specification) should be used to account for the second order
effects.
5. Use loads and moments obtained from the requirements of the Effective Length Method. A
W12 x 120 beam-column in a braced frame must support the service loads shown in the
figure below. The member is A992 steel, Cb may be assumed to be 1.0, and bending is about
the strong axis. The member is laterally braced at its ends only and Lx = Ly = 16 ft. Is the
member adequate? The loads and moments were obtained from a first-order analysis and the
approximate analysis method (Appendix 8 of AISC Specification) should be used to account
for the second order effects.
