The SLP model describes the lifetime spectra for polymers at the assumption of slow

localization and thermalization of positronium in polymers as well as a possibility of delayed

Ps formation due to quasi-free electrons generated by the radioactive source. The model takes
into account a trapping of positrons in active centers in the polymer structure. For detailed
description of the program see

The tutorial shows how to use the SLP model to analysis a series of spectra of polyurethane.
The analysis is detailed described in : Kansy-J, A comparison of different theoretical models
of positron lifetime spectra for polymers, Acta-Physica-Polonica-A. May 2008; 113(5): 1397-
407. All needed data are included into the sent folders.

1. Run the ProgramLT_9_SLP_1 program.

2. With Option/Folders specify the defaults folders for data and results (e.g. in
D:\SLP\Data and D:\SLP\Result)
3. Click ETLA. From the Data folder select files which is to be analyzed. In our case all
the VR*.Dat spectra
4. In the box -Data Base for Results- choose the option Create a new data base then
write a name for the new data base
5. A figure appears. In the figure select the range of spectrum channels in which the
analysis should be performed (eg. from 11 to 730). All of the spectra in a series will be
analyzed in the same selected range of channels.
6. In the box Model Parameters choose the option Parameter Data Base
7. Choose the data base with previously determined parameters ( in our case
VR_112_Series_SLP_08) and input first row of this the data base into the program
8. In The Editor of the PALS parameters click OK
9. First spectrum of the series is analyzed. When the calculations stop, start calculations
for other spectra of the analyzed series. (Answer Yes to the question Start calculation for
series?)
10. A box with the model parameters appears (see below). The names of the parameters
are similar to those used in the papers describing the model SLP + DFP [1-4].
Parameters „none” are not used in
the model. Their values should not
be changed and they should be
fixed (accept the first one)

11. Specify the statuses of parameters (Fixed/Global) like in the figure. Parameters
indicated by Fixed are fixed and common for all the spectra in the analyzed series.
Parameters indicated by Global have free but common value for all the spectra.
Parameters which are not indicated by Fixed or Global are free and can receive
different values for each spectrum of series. Parameters tau_relax and tau_free are
assumed to be linear functions of temperature (value of temperature has to be specified
in the data file (third row) as the Key Value). Note: “tau_relax” in the list really
means tau_relax (0). The temperature coefficient is denoted by alfa(tau relax)*1E4.
Similar convention concerns tau_free. The aim of these assumptions is to reduce the
number of free parameters.
12. Before final calculations the model parameters should have statuses shown in the
figure below
13. Start calculations by clicking OK. Do not care the names of parameters which
appeared on the screen during the calculations.
14. When calculations stop, you can see the results on the screen. Again the parameters
have wrong captions.
15. To observe the results (with correct names of parameters) open the current data base
with Results/Show a data base (in menu).
16. Convert the data base into a text file and then export the text file into Microsoft Word.
An example of the data base in the Word format is include into a sent folder.
