ABSTRACT

The aim of the project titled ‘Data hiding technique for image steganography using
histogram re-quantization’ is to utilize images to hide data. Steganography, a technique of
data hiding, is becoming more and more significant with expansion of the Internet
communication. As a result, various steganographic algorithms have been proposed in recent
years.

In order to reinforce more security and more data embedding capacity, this project extends
the Ni’s algorithm by enhancing the security using Caesar Cipher encryption algorithm and a
histogram re-quantization. To begin with, applying an encryption technique, the security is
not easy to be broken by a brute-force attack. In addition, the embedding capacity is able to
be enhanced by adopting a histogram re-quantization. As to our approach, it is visually
indistinguishable between a cover image and a stego image with a large embedding capacity.

The project explains the concept of a novel steganographic algorithm that is highly effective.
It is designed to have a large payload capacity and robust. The message is hidden in such a
way that it is invisible to the naked eye. The proposed algorithm is implemented on Matlab
and Verilog platforms. The Verilog emendation makes use of the ‘dictionary’ technique
which creates a look-up table as a text-file and the embedding algorithm accesses it for data.

Every technique has some advantages and disadvantages. But the histogram method is a very
good compromise between performances, robustness, capacity and quality of embedding.
