FULL TEXT
It is piquant that while gourmet guides are losing their preeminence as the arbiters of good taste, never has food
had it so good. In fact, the resultant related phenomenon called food pornography has become the quintessential
21st-century sin. It is widespread, gaining momentum and remains deliberately unmonitored.
Millions would vouch that it is unbelievably pleasurable but it is not illegal. It has no age, gender, geographical,
cultural or religious bars attached to it. Given its inherent and limitless diversity, it also does not run the danger of
being stereotyped or leading to jaded palates.
Nor is there any shame in pleading guilty of either indulging in it personally or merely enjoying it vicariously. And,
best of all, anyone can do it, anytime, anywhere.
This democratisation is commendable, though critics may liken it to tipping food from (seasoned) frying pans into
(untested) fires with no guarantee of skill or accuracy. But the explicit pleasures the actions arouse probably make
up for any shortcomings in technique.
As cooking has become a parallel passion -- thanks to food-related TV programmes as well as online recipe banks,
blogs and how-to videos -- this century could see orgy of gourmanderie on a scale unprecedented since the
discovery of fire-grilling made early humans turn away from early sashimi.
