Introduction
Unemployment is defined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics as the people who do not have a job,
have actively looked for and are currently available for work. Also, people who were waiting to
be called back to that job are included in the unemployment statistics.

In the finalization of completing this topic, the researcher shared out a number of questionnaires,
as well as carried out a few interviews to get a better understanding of the causes and effects of
unemployment on Mahaica.

 What are the causes of unemployment?
 What are some effects of unemployment?
 What are some of the economical effects unemployment has on Mahaica?
 What are some of the social effect of unemployment on Mahaica?
 What are some of the consequences faced by persons being unemployed?

size of unemployed persons?

2
Background
What is unemployment?

People who are jobless, actively seeking work, and available to take a job.

Slightly more than 172 million people globally were unemployed in 2018. That is about 2
million less than the previous year. The International Labour Organization expects the global
unemployment rate of the fivr percent to remain essentially unchanged over the next five
years.

LIMA (ILO News)- The unemployment rate in Latin America and the Caribbean fell slightly
to a forecast 7.8 in 2018, from 8.1 percent in 2017, reversing a three year trend of rising
unemployment, the ILO said in its overview 2018 regional report.

The unemployment rate in the fourth quarter of 2017 was 12.2 percent corresponding to
36,416 persons. This rate is not very different from the rate registered in the 2012 census and
third quarter 2017, where unemployment was 12.5 and 12 percent respectively.

2
Methodology
The researcher chose two methods in conducting the surveys for unemployment in her
community.

Questionnaire

It is a set of printed or written questions with a choice of answers, devised for the purposes of
a survey or statistical study.

Questionnaires can be an effective means of measuring the behaviour, attitude, preferences,

opinions and intentions of relatively large numbers of subjects more cheaply and quickly than
other methods.

There is also limitations in using such method of data collection. Some are the following:

 if you forget to ask a question, you cannot usually go back to respondents, especially if
they are anonymous.
 it is sometimes difficult to obtain a sufficient number of responses, especially from postal
questionnaires.
Interview
An interview is a conversation where questions are asked and answers are given. In
common parlance, the word 'interview' refers to a one-on-one conversation between an
interviewer and an interviewee.
The main advantage of interviews are that they are useful to obtain detail information
about personal feelings, perception and opinions, they allow more detailed questions to
be asked and they usually achieve a high response rate.
Similarly to the questionnaires, interviews also have their disadvantages. Some would be
the following:
 they can be very time-consuming: setting up, interviewing, transcribing, analyzing,
feedback, reporting.
 they can be costly.
 different interviewers may understand and transcribe interviews in different ways.
