The position paper at IBM Research internship

Thank you very much for providing such opportunity to express my feelings regarding during IBM
internship.
Machine learning and Natural language processing are most interesting and relevant applications areas
of my interest that I will want to work in IBM research Lab because of the following reasons Machine
Learning, and Natural Language Processing (NLP) are transforming the technological landscape in a
wide range of applications for different domains. The growth in opining mining technology inspired
different researchers to explore and investigate applications of NLP for different languages are
available freely for research purpose. NLP is everywhere even if we don’t realize it. Different Natural
Language Processing Applications are at work. Although NLP applications rarely perform at a high
level, they are already at work, helping us perform many of our daily activities. At end I did my
Master Thesis on title constructing sentiment mining model for opinionated afan oromo texts on
Ethiopian politics domain i am really impressed by advances made in machine learning and NLP so I
hope that you will acknowledge my interests in acquiring the knowledge and doing related research
work under your kind supervision. I assure you that you will find me a very hardworking and result-
oriented researcher who will build a high pillar of innovation and creativity on the strong foundation
of knowledge at your research center. We use natural language applications or benefit from them
every day to solve problem you want.
Here are some relevant applications of the most widely used NLP applications are
 Machine translation helps us conquer language barriers that we often encounter by translating
technical manuals, support content or catalogs at a significantly reduced cost.
 Automatic summarization Information overload is a real problem when we need to access a
specific, important piece of information from a huge knowledge base.
 Sentiment analysis The goal of sentiment analysis is to identify sentiment among several
posts or even in the same post where emotion is not always explicitly expressed
 Text classification makes it possible to assign predefined categories to a document
and organizes it to help you find the information you need or simplify some activities.
Question answering as speech-understanding technology and voice-input applications
improve; the need for NLP will only increase.
Here are some relevant interesting applications of machine learning are

 detecting fraud at banks

 identifying human genes that make people more likely to develop cancer
 programmatically recognizing faces
 autonomous, self-driving cars like Google cars
 anti-virus software (packet inspection)
 factory maintenance diagnostics
 determining which voters to canvass during an election
 search engines (Google)
 predicting interests (Facebook)
 predicting other books you might like (Amazon
In my opinion, the most important technical challenges in Machine Learning are
 Computational complexity indicates how much effort is needed to execute an algorithm, or
what its cost (computational power and storage). And
 We don’t know how much data are needed for analysis to get better accuracy.
 Identifying the right data, machine learning need mostly a lot of right data in order to work
properly.
 Identifying the right ML model works best for the problem (ML architecture)

NLP is challenging for many reasons. The Most important technical challenges are
handling synonymy and polysemy. Some other challenges in NLP are as follows:
 Word sense ambiguity
 Language dynamism: language is not static/Language grows and changes.
 language is compositional
 .Understanding Context
 Phrases ,Modifier attachment ,Discourse ,Sentence generation:
The followings are things that I want to achieve from IBM Research center

I always have keen interest in join IBM, I believe in myself. The facilities and conducive atmosphere
of IBM research will help me to enhance my technical skills creativity, perseverance, teamwork, and
enthusiasm and talent in a better way and will lead me towards a bright future about from this field.
I think it is the time for me to go beyond the horizons and acquire knowledge of highest level. The
well-qualified and experienced faculty, excellent laboratory facilities, exceptional research work and
the inspiration given to me at your LAB would provide me an ideal platform for achieving my goals
and developing my skills of innovation and build relationships with people around the office
Want to Increase capable of solving problem and acquire a greater sense of professionalism to know
the concept of quantum computer

 working with teams and my manager on any projects that provide for me
 Being curious, ask lots of questions, try and understand why something is important or why it
works
 to ask for feedback try to learn from my performance
 Time management, focus, obsession to get a task done are all skills that are critical for success
