6 - TGA Matching
In this step, we define perforations for both wells; therefore, both wells should be perforated in the
same blocks, as shown below. Click Wells & Recurrent -> Well Completions (PERF)… and add the
following perforations. Make sure the well radius is 0.0002 and the specified well direction is K:
You should now see green check marks for all sections. Save the dataset.
3. Output the following properties so they are available for analysis in Results Graph/3D:
4.
We also need to add special outputs. Click the Special button under OUTSRF and add material
balance statistics for the components, as shown below:
OUTSRF SPECIAL
5. We know that the TG analyzer is being heated, during the TGA experiment, at a rate of 5°C/min,
so we need to factor this into our model. We do this by defining a heater, in both blocks of the
model, which will operate on the temperature setpoint, which will change with time to provide the
heating rate of 5°C/min. To do this, we need to define the keywords shown below after the well
definition at the initial date of DATE 2013 1 1 (using a text editor).
• TMPSET CON: 20
7.
Save the dataset and run it in STARS for one time step. Check the .out file to make sure that the
initial volumes and masses are correct. In our case, the volumes are very close to the ones that were
calculated in the Excel spreadsheet (TGA_initial_data.xlsx) and the oil mass is 9.9906E-6 kg:

9.
Open workspace file tga_athabasca_oil_100kpa_N2.rws and browse for your .irf file. Look at the
results and make sure that the temperature in the model is increasing the same way as it was during
the TGA experiment in the lab; otherwise, the heating rate needs to be tuned. To compare them,
you will need to plot Temperature of block 1 1 1 from the FHF file and the simulation results file,
through Add Block Property vs. Time.
9. . Have a look at the initial match of the weight fraction curve. In the next section, we will try to
improve the match
