Politics is a topic that most people avoid to bring up in a conversation or even disassociate
themselves with but what they do not know is that it cannot be completely avoided. I remember
our professor in Political Science says that we cannot avoid it simply because we are part of it
from the moment we are born. The family that we have is politics because there is a superior
which are the parents and there are subordinates which are their children. This suggests that
politics is inevitable and that it is a part of every person’s life, therefore, we must give
importance to it. There are several reasons why is it significant, but I would like to focus on one
idea. According to Plato, “The penalty that good men pay for not being interested in politics is to
be governed by men worse than themselves”. The good men in the quote represents the
people. It is enough that these good men do nothing for the evil, pertaining to the public
officials, to succeed. This is why it is important for the people to be involved or to be associated
with what is happening in the government. It is the people who have the power, although most
do not realize that, because the purpose of these politicians is to serve the people, therefore,
they must answer to what they need or what is good for them. But since most of the politicians
are not really a public servant but a servant of their own pockets, and because most of the
people do not really care about politics, it is easy for these evil to take advantage the people, to
exploit the riches of the state, and that is the cost of doing nothing.

2. As some of the people know both Accountancy and Political Science are a pre-law programs,
suggesting that there is a close relationship between the two. Accountancy is about keeping the
fairness and equality in recording transactions and keeping financial records. Political Science is
about ensuring the order of the rule of law in the society. Accounting and political science
although with different objectives but together they contribute mutually for the benefit of
whole society. For example, taxes, government expenditure, and national income related
problems are within the domain of accountancy but how to solve these problems in a
harmonious way for a better standard of life is within the competence of political science

3. There are four elements of the state and these are divided into two which are physical bases of
the state and political bases of the state. Under the physical bases are population and territory,
and under the political bases are government and sovereignty.

Population

It is the people who makes up the state. Population is essential as no an uninhabited land can be called a
state. According to Plato, the ideal population of a state would be 5040, which is pretty specific and
contrary to what Aristotle said that, a population should be neither too large nor too small. It is
impossible to make a single rule about the number of a population, although it is safe to say that more
than a single family is needed, but the population should be many enough to maintain a political
organization (Marume, 2016).

Territory

A territory is a defined geographical are that is owned and controlled by a government to exercise state
sovereignty and where people live socially and politically. The territory includes all of its land, water, and
air. There is no state without its territory for it is the people’s connection with a particular territory that
normally create the membership of state. Just like population, there is no definite size of a territory. It
can be big like Russia or it can be as small as the Vatican City.

Government

The third element of the state is government. Government is the working agency and the political
organization of the state. Once there is population in a territory and once there is a common purpose, a
system is develop to regulate the activities of the members. In the said system, a person or group of
persons are regarded to act and speak for the whole population.

Sovereignty

The fourth essential element of the state is sovereignty which means supreme and final legal authority
above and beyond which no legal power exists. The word sovereignty came from the Latin word
sovereinete which means supreme/above. Sovereignty has two aspects: Internal and external
sovereignty.

Internal sovereignty means that the State has a supreme authority over all the people within the
territory. The people who abide their own will and fail to follow the law will be compelled to obey or
receive a threat of punishment.

External sovereignty means that the state is independent and free from foreign control. It means that
the sovereign is an independent entity, free from alien rule or control, in its conduct with other states
and international organization.

Sovereignty although the last element of the state is important for it is said that it is what distinguishes
the state from all other forms of human association
