About the University
Annamalai University is a unitary, teaching, and residen-
tial university governed by the Annamalai University Act,
2013. It was founded by the munificence of the farsighted
and noble hearted philanthropist, the late Hon’ble Dr.
Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar of Chettinad. He started
several colleges, and ultimately, the University in 1929.
Since its inception, it has progressively realized the aims
of the Founder Pro-Chancellor. After him, his illustrious
son, Padma Bhushan Dr. Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar of
Chettinad, was the Pro-Chancellor from 1948 to 1984,
and he sedulously nurtured the growth and development
of the University. The University has had the unique good
fortune of having a succession of eminent Vice-
Chancellors to guide its destinies. Among the 219 univer-
sities (both Central and State Universities), Annamalai
University stands at the 13th position in terms of the year
of establishment. During the last eighty seven years, the
University has grown rapidly and has consolidated its
position as a unitary and residential University with forty-
nine Departments of Study. Annamalainagar is already a
busy and full-fledged University town, east of Chidam-
baram, the abode of Lord Nataraja. The University cam-
pus, including the colleges, hostels, and playgrounds,
occupies an area of about thousand acres. It is well con-
nected by surface transport and railways. The National
Assessment and Accreditation Council has accredited the
University the “A” Grade among the universities.
About the Department
The Department of English, established in 1929, has been
focusing on teaching and research activities, catering to
the needs of the talented and the socially and economi-
cally challenging students. Over 80% of our alumni are
employed in schools, colleges, and universities across the
country. The total student-strength, which includes M.A.,
M.Phil., and PhD, is 1050. To keep abreast of the times,
the faculty engage themselves in research pursuits, and
between 2007 and 2016, a total of 241 researchers have
earned M.Phil. degrees, and 78 their Ph.D. degrees. Sev-
eral distinguished luminaries , writers, and critics like
Stephen Spender, I.A. Richards, F.T. Prince, Dr. Grace
Nutley, Ravi Sheorey, etc., visited and delivered lectures
in the Department. The Faculty Members of the Depart-
ment keep on publishing research papers and occupy
various positions in the academic arena across the coun-
try. Our distinguished faculty members Dr. S. Thayuma-
navan, Dr. R. Ganapathi, Dr. F. Abdul Rahim, Dr. L. Jegan-
natharaja, and Dr. K. Muthuraman visited the United
States at their invitation to take part in research oriented
activities.
