Bearing life
The nominal life is defined as the number of hours that Permissible force at changed bearing life or supply frequency
are attained or exceeded by 90% of identical bearings,
in a large test series, under certain specified conditions. Bearing life in hours at
50% of the bearings attain a life of as much as 5 times Permissible force, as percentage of
50 Hz 60 Hz value in table on page 8 and 9
this figure.
The life of bearings is dependent on various factors, 25000 21000 100% of value
for 25000 hours
such as bearing load, motor speed, operating tempera-
ture and the purity of the grease. The permissible radial 40000 33000 100% of value
and axial loading for different motor sizes is shown in for 40000 hours
the table on page 8 and 9. 63000 52000 86% of value
for 40000 hours
The table is valid for 50 Hz. For 60 Hz and/or some
other bearing life than is specified in the table, the 80000 67000 80% of value
for 40000 hours
values are changed according to the table on the right.
The table values assume the occurrence of only radial
(FR) or axial (FA) forces. In the case of simultaneous
radial and axial forces, information can be supplied on
request. It is assumed that the radial force, FR, is
applied at the end of the motor shaft, according to the
diagram on the right.

Pulley diameter
When the desired bearing life has been determined, the
minimum permissible pulley diameter can be calculated
with FR (or FRX), according to the formula:
1.9 • 107 • K • P
D=
n • FR(X)
where:
D = diameter of pulley, mm
P = power requirement, kW FR = permissible radial force according to the table
n = motor speed, r/min. on page 8 and 9.
K = belt tension factor, dependent on belt type and FRX = permissible radial force according to the
type of duty. A common value for V-belts is formula under the heading “Bearing life”,
K = 2.5 above.

Permissible loading on shaft
Permissible axial force FA and radial force FR
The table values for FA apply to horizontal mounting. In the case of vertical mounting, consideration must be given
to the rotor weight, according to note 2. The bearing life, L10, is calculated according to SKF’s new theory on bearing
life, L10aah, which also takes the purity of the grease into consideration. An adequate lubrication is a necessary
prerequisite for the table below.

ABB Motors' new range of aluminium motors meet the highest efficiency and operational
reliability levels demanded by many of today's industrial processes.
56 ABB Motors
ABB's aluminium motors play an important role in the efficient and
reliable operation of Atlas Copco's compressors. The compressors are
designed to be operationally quiet, light weight and of compact design
for ease of positioning. These are attributes which aluminium motors
adequately match.
ABB Motors 57
ABB Motors' new aluminium series covers a vast application
range. Shown here is the 45 kW type M2AA 225 SMB, 5.5 kW
