Mother’s Shopping List

Think and Discuss

Write down Mother’s shopping list for this week. Note the items she is
going to buy. List them by using the first consonant of its name.

A Cake
Today Mother will make a cake. She got the
recipe from a magazine. The ingredients for
making the cake are as follows:
Ingredient A: Ingredient B:
 200 gr eggs  150 gr wheat flour

 100 gr yolk  25 gr full cream milk powder

 250 gr sugar  5 gr baking powder

 10 gr salt

 20 gr emulsifier (e.g. TBM, SP, etc)

 5 gr vanilla

Ingredient C: Ingredient D:
 100 gr butter  10 gr chocolate powder
 100 gr margarine  25 gr cake seasoning

Mathematics for Junior High School Year 8/1

Task
Write down the algebraic form of each ingredient. Note every ingredient
as A, B, C, D.
Write down the algebraic form for all ingredients. For notation, use the
first consonants of each name of the ingredients.

Remember: The unit of each ingredient needs to be considered.

Going to a Restaurant
One Sunday, Andi and 4 other members of his family went to a
restaurant. They are his father, his mother, his brother Yopi, and his
sister Dina. It was Andi’s birthday. He treated his family with his own
money. He had saved it for quite a while.
Each person ordered different items
from the menu as follows:
Father:
1 Hamburger, 2 French Fries,
1 Cheese-stick, and 1 Soda.
Mother:
1 Hamburger, 1 French Fries,
2 Pancakes, and 1 Soda
Yopi:
3 French Fries, 2 Cheese-sticks and
1 Soda
Andi:
2 Hamburgers, 1 Cheese-stick, and
1 Soda
Dina:
1 Pancake, 2 French Fries, and 1 Soda

Task
1. Write down one algebraic form for each order. For notation, use the
first letter of each item.

2. Write down the algebraic form for all of their order. Simplify the
algebraic form that you get.

Picnic to the Beach

Via, Muti, Tantri, and Maudi are students of grade 8 at Nusantara

Junior High School. They have been close friends since they were in
elementary school.
Last holiday the four students went to the beach for a picnic. Mr
Darno, Via’s father, took them there. They were very happy during the trip.
At 9 a.m. they arrived at the beach.

The four friends soon competed collecting many cockles, snail-

houses, and other shells of sea animals spread out along the beach. After an
hour, they gathered on the car park to count how many cockles, snail-houses,
and other shells of sea animals they had collected.
Via got 4 yellow cockles, 3 black cockles, 5 red snail-houses, and 3
brown-spotted snail-houses. Muti got 4 brown snail-houses, 3 houses of
porcupine-snail, and 4 yellow cockles. Tantri obtained 4 black cockles, 2
yellow cockles, 1 house of porcupine-snail, and 2 brown snail-houses.
Maudy got 3 yellow cockles, 2 red snail-houses, 1 black cockle, 2 houses of
porcupine-snail, and 1 spotted snail-house
.
Task
1. Write down the algebraic form representing what each of Via and her
friends collected from the beach. Use appropriate notation for each shell they
got.

Lab in the Student’s Book. Explain the steps you use.

2. A garden has a rectangular form. Its length is

5m longer than twice its width. On both sides
there is a pathway of 1m in width. The area of
the pathway is 24 m 2 . What are the length and
width of the garden?
To solve this problem, you may use algebraic
units to model the problem.

Exploration:
The length of the garden is ....................
 The width of the garden and the pathway is
....................
 The length of the garden and the pathway is
..................
 The area of the garden is.........................

Mathematics for Junior High School Year 8/7

 The area of the garden and the pathway
is ........................
2x + 5

x+1 x

2x + 6

Area of the
Planning: Area of the Area of the
garden and the
garden pathway
pathway
(x + 1)(2x + 6) – x(2x + 5) = 24

Solution:
(x + 1)(2x + 6) – x(2x + 5) = 24
x 2 +6x + 2x + 6 – 2x 2 5x = 24 (Why?)
(2x 2 –2x 2 ) + (6x + 2x –5x) + 6 = 24 (Why?)
3x + 6 = 24 (Why?)
3x = 18 (Why?)
x = 6 (Why?)
So the width of the garden is .............
The length of the garden is ......................................

Checking: Area of garden and pathway – area of garden = area of pathway
